Qnexa a Potentially New Obesity Drug? | Bodybuilding ...
Proponents of a new obesity medication from Vivus Inc told U.S. reviewers on Wednesday that the drug?s health benefits exceed heart and birth defect risks.
A panel of outside experts to the Food and Drug Administration will vote later on Wednesday on whether to recommend approval for what would be the first new prescribed drug for obesity in 13 years.
The FDA first rejected Vivus? Qnexa in 2010 because of safety problems, along with two other obesity pills that are also seeking a second round of consideration.
The FDA usually follows panel recommendations, although it is not required to. It will make a final decision by April 17.
Qnexa, which combines the appetite suppressant phentermine and anti-seizure drug topiramate, helped patients lose at least 10 percent of their weight after a year of treatment, the company said .
Obesity, a leading cause of diabetes, heart disease and other serious health problems, has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, with about a third of the population obese and more than half overweight.
?Back in medical school, I was taught that when the risk of not treating the condition exceeds the risk of treating it, we should treat,? said Dr. Arya Sharma, a chair in obesity research at the University of Alberta in Canada and paid consultant to Vivus.
?We have an obligation to change how we measure obesity. Qnexa addresses an urgent and substantial unmet medical need for our patients,? he told panelists.
The FDA has set a high approval bar for weight loss drugs because such a large portion of the general population is likely to want to take them, and has not approved a new obesity drug since 1999.
Also, many diet pills have been linked to serious heart-related risks.
But patient groups say the FDA is holding obesity drugs to a higher standard than other treatments because of views that it is a choice, not a disease. They are urging the FDA to approve new obesity drugs that would give patients another option between lifestyle changes and surgery.
Shares of Vivus were halted on Nasdaq on Wednesday pending the outcome of the FDA panel meeting. They closed at $10.55 on Tuesday, well above the stock?s low around $4.70 after the pill was first rejected.
SAFETY RISKS
FDA staff presenting on Wednesday said the key issues with Qnexa were about safety, not efficacy.
Staff reviewers have said patients taking the drug had more safety problems, including memory loss and higher heart rates, than those on a placebo, and some of these problems could get worse over time.
They have also noted that exposure to one of the ingredients in Qnexa has been linked to a higher rate of birth defects.
A Vivus study showed topiramate caused a higher rate of oral clefts in infants of women taking the drug during pregnancy, and the company said it would limit Qnexa to women who are not pregnant.
The FDA has said the rate of potential birth defects is about two to five times higher with topiramate than with placebo.
Vivus officials said obesity, and its common symptom diabetes, come with their own risks to pregnancy, such as stillbirth, premature birth and other complications.
The FDA and the company generally agreed on a program to mitigate the drug?s risks to pregnant women, including limiting the drug to certified pharmacies and training doctors who would prescribe it.
Panelists will discuss whether they think the program is stringent enough to protect patients from the risk of birth defects.
In clinical trials, Qnexa also increased patients? heartbeats, leading to fears it may have negative effects on the heart. However, Vivus said the drug also reduced blood pressure, and a link between heartbeat and heart health was not conclusive.

Take up a hobby you enjoy or learn a new skill. This quality time will help you unwind and relieve stress. It is a very important part of health fitness. One in four would get soaked by a rainy day

Many U.S. consumers are so deep in a financial hole that even as the economy begins to turn around they can?t quite dig themselves out.
A survey by Bankrate.com released Tuesday found that 25 percent Americans have more credit card debt than they have in emergency savings, and that spells trouble if an emergency situation actually hits.
Consumers are doing better when it comes to living within their means, said Greg McBride, Bankrate.com?s senior financial analyst. But, he added, years of stagnant wage growth, high unemployment, declining home values and escalating household expenses have strained wallets. ?Even though there?s been progress things are still out of whack,? he said.
And the economic pictures may get even gloomier for consumers if gas prices continue to escalate, he pointed out. Last year, he said, ?60 percent of Americans said they cut back on discretionary spending because of gasoline prices.?
Those hit hardest when it comes to debt versus savings, are individuals on the low end of the economic ladder and those with less education, according to the study that polled more than 1000 adults earlier this month.
Here are some of the findings:
- 70 percent of those earning $75,000-plus have more in savings than credit card debt vs. 40 percent of those earning less than $30,000 per year.
- 64 percent of college grads have more in savings than in credit card debt vs. 46 percent with a high school education or less.
- 27 percent of Americans report a lower level of financial security now versus one year ago and 24 percent report a higher level.
- 38 percent of Americans are less comfortable with their savings now compared with one year ago; only 14 percent are more comfortable.
The overall percentage of consumers who have more emergency savings than credit card debt actually inched up to 54 percent of those polled, compared to 52 percent in the same month last year. But that doesn?t mean people are necessarily more debt adverse.
?They can?t go spend money they don?t have,? McBride explained, because credit is so tight today, particularly when it comes to consumers who don?t have the best credit ratings.
A bad credit rating can also create a double whammy for those people looking for jobs because some employers now use credit reports when evaluating job candidates. That?s even worse news for individuals trying to pay off debt.
High amounts of debt and thin savings have become a fixture in U.S. society. ?Over the years, the savings? needle hasn?t moved,? he said. ?From 2007 and 2011, the percentage of Americans with three months worth of expenses in savings, which is not adequate, is unchanged.?
It?s something we may be used to, he maintained, but ?it?s not a recipe for people having a warm and fuzzy feeling about their financial situation.?

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) ? A 98-year-old Connecticut woman facing eviction by her son says she's upset and wants to stay in the home where she raised her children.
Mary Kantorowski has lived in her yellow Cape Cod-style home in Fairfield since 1953. She said Friday that the home means "everything" to her.
Her oldest son, 71-year-old Peter Kantorowski of Trumbull, told the Connecticut Post he's concerned about her well-being. He says when he last saw her eight months ago, she seemed disoriented and was living in poor conditions.
Peter Kantorowski owns the house. He says his mother has rejected his suggestions to live with him or in a nursing home.
Another son, Jack Kantorowski, tells WTNH-TV that his brother is a "scumbag."
A trial begins March 2 in Bridgeport.

After Zynga Settlement, Layoffs Hit Brazilian Social Gaming ...

Brazilian social gaming giant Vostu is laying off an undisclosed number of employees, we?ve learned. Vostu, which has raised $46 million from Intel Capital, Accel Partners, General Catalyst, and Tiger Technology Global Management; is one largest social gaming companies in Latin America. The gaming company was founded in 2007 by three Harvard classmates: CEO Daniel Kafie, chief scientist Mario Schlosser, and Joshua Kushner.
It?s unclear what?s caused the layoffs but Vostu is fresh off of a settlement with Zynga over copyright issues. As we?ve reported in the past, Zynga hit Vostu with a massive lawsuit in June of 2011, alleging that the company was copying Zynga?s games. In fact, Zynga alleged that Vostu was copying Zynga?s games so closely that they even inadvertently included the bugs.
Vostu then claimed that Zynga has copied other games repeatedly over the years, including Zynga?s hit game Cityville. Zynga then sued shareholder Google over the?dispute, because Orkut, which is popular in Brazil, was hosting the Vostu games that Zynga said were?ripoffs.
In December, both companies issued a statement that they had settled the copyright lawsuits and counterclaims against each other in the legal systems in the United States and Brazil. As part of the settlement, Vostu made a monetary payment to Zynga and made changes to four of its games.
Perhaps the layoffs could be a result of the settlement and the legal costs associated with the matter. But Vostu has reportedly been growing in terms of traffic, and launched four mobile games over the past two months (and the company has said that 25 percent of all internet-connected Brazilians play its games). Next month, the company plans to launch two additional games.

The Empire State Building is set to make a $1?billion?IPO, but investors probably won't be as excited as they were about Facebook or other tech IPOs.

Skip to next paragraphThe company that runs the Depression-era skyscraper, the tallest?buildingin New York, is planning to go public in a stock offering that could raise $1 billion, according to documents filed with regulators Monday.
That means that even if you can't afford to buy a home, you can buy a stake in perhaps the nation's most iconic office?building. At least until the government sells shares in the Pentagon.
The planned IPO comes about 10 years after real estate investor Peter Malkin bought the 102-story Art Deco landmark from Donald Trump and a business partner for $57.5 million.
It's the latest chapter in a saga that dates to 1931, when the?building?was completed, establishing it as the city's tallest skyscraper. It regained that standing after the collapse of the World Trade Center twin towers in the Sept. 11 attacks.
Millions of tourists visiting New York ascend its heights to gape over the city from its observation deck, made famous in films such as "Sleepless in Seattle." It was 1933's "King Kong" that showed a giant ape clutching Fay Wray and fending off airplanes atop the tower.
The?building's?star turns in Hollywood blockbusters and TV shows and its dominant presence in the New York landscape have made it among the most beloved structures in the nation. And the opportunity to buy stock in a company that owns such a landmark doesn't come up often.
Some of the nation's marquee?buildings?are owned by publicly traded companies. Boston Properties owns the General Motors?building?in New York and the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco's financial district. But neither has the history that the?Empire?State?Building?has.
"You have a trophy property that is irreplaceable," says Hessam Nadji, managing director for research and advisory services at Marcus & Millichap, a commercial real estate services firm.
In its regulatory filing Monday,?Empire?State?Realty Trust Inc. didn't say how many shares might be involved in the IPO or what price they might fetch. The $1 billion figure isn't final, either. It's subject to investor demand.
The company, the predecessor of which is Malkin Holdings LLC, plans to use proceeds to pay investors, repay loans and cover the expenses of the IPO and the company's formation last summer, as well as for possible future acquisitions.

NJ church where Houston first sang remembers her (AP)
NEWARK, N.J. ? Congregants at the Newark church where Whitney Houston got her start came together Sunday to mourn her sudden death.
Houston, 48, died Saturday at a Beverly Hills, Calif., hotel, authorities said. The cause wasn't known, her publicist said.
The pop star began singing at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark as a child. And while parishioners had fond memories of her many performances there over the years, they said her and her family's longtime membership and service to the church is what they will never forget.
Houston was born in Newark and raised in East Orange, and many said she never forgot her Jersey roots. Her mother, Grammy-award winning gospel singer Cissy Houston, had led the musical program at the 112-year-old church. Whitney's cousin, singer Dionne Warwick, also sang in its choir.
"The pastor asked us to support the Houston family, to share our love and God's love with them and to give them strength in this sad time," said Shawn Cooper, 32, of Newark as he left an early morning service, which was only open to church members.
"I haven't been a regular churchgoer, but felt I should be here today because this is a time for the community to come together," Cooper said, noting the church was full Sunday morning. "The Houston family means a lot to this community, they have done a lot for this community, and being there for them is the best thing we can do as a community today."
Several other parishioners voiced similar sentiments as they made their way into the church, ignoring the bitter cold temperatures and moderate to gusty winds.
A few sympathy cards were tied to a fence post at the church, including one addressed "to the greatest songstress ever." Next to it, a small bouquet of fresh flowers fluttered softly in the brisk morning air.
Speaking outside the church before the service, New Hope's Pastor Joe Carter asked reporters gathered to respect the Houston family's privacy.
"The family shared Whitney with the world, but Whitney was a mother, a daughter, and a sister, and that's the focus we want to keep in front of everyone today. We ask that in this time of grief, you respect their privacy," Carter said.
At another service later Sunday morning, the Rev. Jesse Jackson made a surprise appearance at the church. He recalled watching Houston perform in the church choir and spoke on how she had "grown up in this wonderful church," noting that New Hope was involved "in the height" of the nation's civil-rights struggle.
Jackson said he was "traumatized" by Houston's sudden and unexpected death, noting that it came less than two week after the death of Don Cornelius, the creator and longtime host of TV's "Soul Train" show.
"Before we could adjust to (Cornelius' death), the news broke last night about Whitney," he said. "The two announcements had a devastating impact."
A former classmate at a Newark high school recalled Houston in a phone interview as a sweet, bubbly yet unpretentious girl.
Dr. Maria Pane said she attended Mount Saint Dominic Academy with Whitney Houston. The two had homeroom together as well as physical education, French and art.
"She was such a beautiful, kind girl and very quiet that to be honest with you, I had no idea there was a star in the making," said Pane, who now lives in Maryland.
Pane said the two rode the bus together after school, and she remembered Whitney's favorite way to pass the time at the bus stop: practicing her dance routines.
In a statement late Saturday night, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie called the singer "a true New Jersey treasure" who died too soon.
"Her terribly premature death is an awful loss for her family and the incredible New Jersey musical family. Her soaring talent put her in the pantheon of great New Jersey musical talents like Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen. Our prayers are with her family."
Some of Houston's fans came to the church Sunday as a way of dealing with their grief. Among them was Charice Crawford, a 34-year-old Irvington resident who said the singer's music became the soundtrack to her life.
"This is where I needed to be this morning," said Crawford, who does not belong to the church. "I understand why I couldn't attend the service, but being here helps ease the grief of her passing."
When she was a child, Crawford said she and her younger brother would pretend they were Houston and ex-husband Bobby Brown, singing their songs to entertain family members.
"I always wanted to be her when I was little, and I always bought her albums the minute they came out, Crawford said. "It's so sad to think she'll never sing again."

News Corp reaches more phone hacking settlements (Reuters)
LONDON (Reuters) ? A further 15 politicians, sportsmen and celebrities reached settlements with the British newspaper arm of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp on Wednesday over a phone hacking scandal that has rocked his global media empire.
The development increases the chances that the publisher may yet avoid further embarrassing details of its conduct from being publicly aired in court - although at least one of the claimants, Charlotte Church, has not yet reached a deal.
A civil trial to establish general principles of how hacking victims should be compensated is due to start next week, provided that the remaining claimants do not settle.
Among those who settled on Wednesday were comedian Steve Coogan, lawmaker Simon Hughes and ex-soccer player Paul Gascoigne, the Press Association reported.
The civil process was begun a year ago to deal with an expected avalanche of hundreds of claimants, and the announcement of the settlements came during a hearing to prepare for the long-awaited civil court trial.
The agreed settlements ranged from 40,000 pounds to 75,000 pounds ($119,000), the Press Association reported.
Last month, 37 legal claims against NGN, publisher of some of News International's titles, were settled. News International said at the time this was not an admission that management had known about the practice or tried to cover it up.
News International had claimed for years that the hacking of voicemails to generate stories for the News of the World tabloid, which was shut down last summer, was the work of a single "rogue" reporter who went to jail for the crime in 2007.
However, it finally admitted the problem was widespread amid a wave of evidence, sparking a scandal that has rocked the company, the British press, police and the political establishment.
Lawmaker Hughes called for anyone involved in criminal activity at the News of the World to be charged and all those who allowed a large company to behave in such a way to be held to account.
"It was criminal behavior on an industrial scale," he said in a statement.
Three criminal investigations are currently underway while a judge-led inquiry into Britain's press ethics sits most days, bringing yet more attention to the conduct of the media as it considers new regulations.
The long-running saga blew up last July when it emerged that the voicemail of missing schoolgirl Milly Dowler, later found murdered, had been hacked into by the News of the World.
Amid public disgust, Murdoch shut down the 168-year-old Sunday tabloid and pulled its plan to take full control of Britain's highly profitable satellite broadcaster BSkyB.
The scandal has also forced the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesman, a former News of the World editor, and seen the departure of a number of News International executives and senior police officers accused of failing to properly investigate the affair. Mexico party picks woman as presidential candidate (AP)
MEXICO CITY ? A major political party in Mexico has chosen a female presidential candidate for the first time, as the ruling party bet that a charismatic former congresswoman will help it erode the lead held by its powerful rival.
After easily winning the National Action Party's primary Sunday night, Josefina Vazquez Mota vowed to unite a party battered by a bloody drug war and help it defeat the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which ruled Mexico for 71 years before being ousted by National Action in 2000.
"I will be the first woman president of Mexico in history," Vazquez Mota, 51, told cheering supporters.
The party's vote for Vazquez Mota over two other candidates sets the race for Mexico's July 1 presidential election. The two other major parties had already selected their candidates.
Vazquez Mota faces an uphill climb against former Mexico State Gov. Enrique Pena Nieto, the front-runner in the polls who could return Mexico's PRI to power after a 12-year hiatus.
The leftist Democratic Revolution Party chose Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who is making his second run after a razor-thin loss in 2006 to President Felipe Calderon. Mexico limits its presidents to a single six-year term.
The personable, cheerful Vazquez Mota invited party members to help her beat the telegenic and handsome Pena Nieto, who is married to a glamorous telenovela star.
"We begin a new road," said Vazquez Mota. "A road to defeat the real adversary of Mexico, who embodies authoritarianism and the worst antidemocratic practices; who represents the way back to corruption and offers impunity as a conviction. The adversary is Pena Nieto and his party."
Vazquez Mota is considered the PRI's strongest challenger, though Mexican voters seem weary of the ruling National Action Party which has governed for 11 years. Delegates are betting that a woman candidate could boost party appeal.
"It injects a certain new note of uncertainty. There's never been a strong female presidential candidate for any other major party before," said Eric Olson, a senior associate at the Woodrow Wilson Center's Mexico Institute. "It adds that historical element and maybe some excitement."
Others argue that the party, known as the PAN, is tainted by a crackdown on drug cartels that has seen violence soar, stalled reforms and corruption.
"Josefina arrives with a weakened party," said Soledad Loaeza, a political science professor in Colegio de Mexico who has studied the evolution of the PAN. "The electorate is not willing to see her as an alternative."
Jose Espina, president of the party's election commission, says Vazquez Mota obtained 55 percent in Sunday's primary, with 89 percent of the polling stations counted. The party's president, Gustavo Madero, later confirmed her nomination.
She was not Calderon's choice to compete for the party, though he appointed her education secretary after she served as his campaign manager in 2006. The party establishment had supported former Finance Secretary Ernesto Cordero.
But the party's rank-and-file membership handed her a victory from the polls. Her two opponents showed their support after the results were announced. More than 400,000 people voted in the primary
Calderon was not the choice of his predecessor, Vicente Fox, whose election in 2000 booted the PRI out of office after 71 years of single-party rule.
The fact that Calderon still won the party nomination and went on to surprise everyone and defeat Lopez Obrador provides a template for Vazquez Mota to pull an upset, even though she now trails Pena Nieto by nearly 20 points in the polls.
Cordero obtained 38 votes, and the third candidate Santiago Creel, a former senator who also ran in the 2006 primaries against Calderon, got 6 percent of the votes.
Women have run for president in Mexico before, but not representing any of the three major parties.
The PAN's choice of Vazquez Mota may have been the wisest, according to political analysts.
"A PRI victory is still the most likely outcome, but it's almost inevitable the race will tighten," said Pamela Starr, a professor at the University of Southern California who writes on Mexican politics. "It will be an interesting campaign, regardless."
Vazquez Mota's party opponents had complained she was a weak lawmaker and couldn't push through an educational reform as secretary.
A married mother of three, Vazquez Mota has used her family life on the campaign trail to garner the support of Mexican mothers and young voters.
"Today I'm committed to take care of your families like I've taken care of mine," she said Sunday. "I want to make Mexico the best country to live in."
Some say Mexico isn't prepared for a woman president, unlike other Latin American countries, but analysts disagree.
"I don't think Mexico is any less ready for a female president than Chile for example," Starr said.
Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Costa Rica are among the nations in Latin America that have recently elected women to their higher posts.

Wrong-number call helps Ohio woman having stroke
CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio (AP) ? A woman who called the wrong number when she suffered a stroke still found help a couple of time zones away.
Loretta Smith, of Cuyahoga Falls near Akron, felt her right side go numb and fell to the floor at her home last weekend.
The 70-year-old Smith said she was able to grab the phone with her left hand and thought she was calling her son. Instead, she was one digit off and reached a man in the Denver area who was originally from northeast Ohio and had kept the same number after he moved.
"It was a woman, and she said 'I may be having a stroke,'" said Kenny Crater, 28, a sculpture major at Metropolitan State University in Denver.
Crater asked for her name and address and offered to get help. His 911 call was answered by Broomfield, Colo., police, who transferred his call to Cuyahoga Falls.
Smith was taken to Summa Western Reserve Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls, where it was determined that she had suffered a mini-stroke, said Dr. Joseph Nienaltowski.
Smith said Crater saved her life. "I want this kid to be praised to high heaven," she said.
Crater said Smith had done her part, too. "I do not feel like I have done anything special," he said.
"I didn't save her," Crater said. "She found me."
