Cloud Gaming Lights Up Internet On-Demand Radar

activision-cloud-gaming

A new social gaming platform by Activision-Blizzard, called Activate, will include cloud storage and a bunch of other interactive features attached to upcoming games including Skylanders: Lost Islands and Skylanders: Battlegrounds.

?Some of the features available to developers with the Activate platform are friends lists, leader boards, achievements, invites, and cloud storage to allow players to access their saved games on multiple devices,? said Social? News Daily.

?Players will be able to log in from their Facebook accounts, and an Activate account will be required to utilize the online modes in all supported games.?

Cloud gaming is seen as one of the biggest potential growth sectors within cloud computing generally, but opinions differ on its ultimate success.

?In our frictionless world, users show less patience in accessing games. Wait for downloads and installations to complete before getting in the game is a barrier,? said Gamasutra, a gaming blog.

?Until recently, the technologies haven?t existed to tackle the problem of instant access head-on. With the cloud, games are physically run in a remote server center and then beamed via video stream to game players through broadband.?

The blog pointed out a similar revenue model to that taking place within the feature phone arena: a third for the games publisher (who brings the game and the IP), a third for the technology provider (who pays for the technology and the servers) and a third for the carrier who pays for the marketing, the billing and the bandwidth).

?The ?not to be discarded- fixed cost of porting the games comes on top and may be bore by any of the partners,? said Gamasutra.

Close-to-death cloud gaming companies like OnLive, have been resurrected in recent months, demonstrating the popularity of on-demand titles that play on TV, PC, Mac, or tablet.

Other huge companies like Verizon, Warner and Comcast all see major opportunities in the cloud gaming environment and may make major announcements about future involvement in coming months.

Meanwhile, after teaming up with Microsoft and leveraging Windows Azure for cloud gaming, Agawi is launching the AGP Gold Program.

?With over 700M Windows 7 licenses sold, the Windows 8 launch on October 26 promises game developers a distribution opportunity not seen since the launch of iOS in 2008,? said Agawi.

Agawi is actively seeking partners and asking these two questions:

  • Are you a web-based mid-core MMO or social games developer?
  • Do you believe your games stand out but need a powerful channel to effectively showcase them in front of massive gaming audiences?

Interested parties can sign up here. ?Also check out this recent Virtual Internet blog post on Sony?s involvement in cloud gaming.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama will travel to storm-stricken New Jersey on Wednesday to view damage from the massive storm that struck the East Coast and to thank first responders.

The White House says Obama will join New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in viewing the damage. Christie is a Republican who has been an Obama critic. But on Tuesday he praised Obama's leadership in dealing with the storm disaster.

Obama said Tuesday at Red Cross headquarters that the storm "is not yet over." He said there are still risks of flooding and downed power lines and called the storm "heartbreaking for the nation."

The president offered his thoughts and prayers to those affected and said "America is with you." He said he told government officials coordinating the response that there was "no excuse for inaction."

5 Things You Can Do During #Frankenstorm To Improve Your ...

Frankenstorm

It?s coming, a historic storm that could present some similar outcomes to Hurricane Irene and is drawing comparisons to centuries old storms. Hurricane Sandy is set to make landfall somewhere between New Jersey and Connecticut and with the prospect of a huge storm it?s always my plan to hunker down and ride out the storm in the comfort of my own home.

If you?re like me, then you probably already have your plans laid out for the weekend, but this doesn?t mean that you can?t continue to work on your Internet Marketing while you?re buried under a blanket, in fact, that would be a perfect time to focus on some of the things that you know are important but that you just haven?t had time to do.

Grab your iPad or your laptop this weekend and start checking off these items from your to-do list and you?ll be in a strong position to jump start your internet marketing post-Frankenstorm.

1.) Research keywords for Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Start here. Not sure what SEO is or how to get started? Review this resource.

2.) Start your blog: Blogging is a critical piece to your Internet Marketing efforts, but it?s often one of the last things that REALTORS? do. Change that this weekend.

3.) Delete any stale and unused social media accounts: If you?re like me you sign up for every new social network that comes out and then it sits dormant for months with no content on it at all, this looks awful to prospective clients. These sites will get found and you will be judged by clients on what they find. It?s better for them to find nothing then to find a whole bunch of somethings with nothing on them.

4.) Update your Facebook profile: This is one you don?t want to delete, in fact, you really need to focus on it. With over 1 billion users and nearly 2 million here in Connecticut, Facebook is a key to unlocking HUGE social media potential for your business.

5.) Google yourself: Knowing what prospects will see when they Google you is important, because trust me they will Google you. If you don?t like what you see, get to work on changing it.

These five things are pretty simple to do and can be done on any of your devices, so you can cuddle up, look out the window and laugh at the #Frankenstorm while it blows through and you knock out some important to dos on your Internet Marketing list.

What is on your #Frankenstorm To Do List? Share it in the comments below.

The Wacky World of Multiple Offers

Today?s Boston real estate market is highly competitive. There is the biggest shortage of inventory in a decade, and the historically low mortgage rates are fueling high buyer demand. This is leading to many competitive bidding situations for desirable properties in high demand areas of the city.

Great news for sellers, right?

Yes?.but?.

Multiple offers are a tricky situation for sellers. It is a nice ?problem? to have, but the situation needs to be handled delicately and transparently for all parties involved so it doesn?t blow up in your face.?Some age old clich?s come to mind?..

Hogs get slaughtered.

One in the hand is sometimes better than two in the bush.

But multiple offers can yield a great end net result for a seller if handled properly.

multiple offers

Let?s say you?ve?valued your home perfectly?and it has created multiple offers (how to do just that will be the topic of a future post).

The bottom line is that buyers detest being in a multiple offer situation. They feel as though they are getting ?bullied?, and the seller must walk a fine line between maximizing their own personal needs, and not simultaneously turning off buyers and creating ill will ? especially considering the transaction will be ongoing for a month or more even after the bidding stops.

On several?occasions?I?ve seen what seemed like advantageous multiple offer situations just evaporate with all the buyers walking away from a deal ? simply by the way it was handled by the seller and their agent.

How do you prevent that from happening?

?

The first thing to consider is that an offer is not just price. The terms of the deal matter just as much.

  • How strong is the buyer financially? Is their loan assured?
  • How experienced are they emotionally (1st timers versus seasoned real estate buyers)?
  • Do the closing dates work?
  • Is there a?discernible?difference in their respective contingencies?

All of these issues are very important when weighting your options as a seller.

Assuming there are multiple offers that are similar in price and terms, then a common, and effective strategy is to ask for everyone?s ?best and final? offer by a specific time (typically 12-24 hours from receiving the multiple offers). ?I have always found that the best strategy when asking for a ?best and final? is foremost to ensure that they are both (or all) worthy of putting people in a ?best and final? situation. There is no need to force everyone into an emotionally volatile situation if there is 1 party that is a clear cut, far and away a ?better? option than all the other offers. Leveraging the competitive landscape is a great thing, if done properly; if not, it can be disastrous.

The one element of this process that I am adamant with my seller clients about is that ?best and final? is a one-time deal. I think it is a questionable strategy to ask for ?best and final? offers, and then try to go back and negotiate more. Yes, we all know there are exceptions to every rule, but I think this shows a lack of courtesy and credibility that can end up having a negative impact on a transaction, versus helping it.

Another factor for sellers to remember is that the market is the best indicator of value. If you have a hot new listing and get lucky enough to get in a multiple offer situation, then there is no more opportune time to learn the true value of your property?.even if none of the offers are at, or over the asking price. Buyers will often stretch their budgets and drop any ?hardline/low ball? negotiating tactics, if they know there are other interested parties. After all, they have to. ?That being said, if there are multiple offers, and the best one is still 3-5% below the asking price, then the odds are that is still going to be the best offer for the property. Thinking other buyers may come along in a week or 2, and be as aggressive is not a wise assumption.

At the end of the day use your ?newness? on market and the competition buzz created by multiple offers to get the best deal you can for yourself as the seller. Just be disciplined enough to realize the context of this fortuitous occurrence.? Treat people ethically, fairly, and appreciate that multiple offers typically will only happen once, and knowing how to handle it will ultimately help you achieve the most optimal end result.

Want to know how to create multiple offers on your home? Pricing your home correctly is the first step. The 2nd is an all encompassing marketing strategy to drive traffic to your home, both on the web and in person.?Contact me?and I?ll be happy to walk you through our marketing strategy with a proven track record to beat the market.

ICBI TVC ? 2 | Image Consulting Business Institute

ICBI is taking a leap ahead in continuing its efforts of reaching out to its audience. The beginning was made with the first set of ads projecting First Impressions and Image Consultants during the show ?What Not to Wear India? hosted by actress Soha Ali Khan and designer Aki Narula. The response to the ads has been tremendous.

We now continue these ads to expand our reach out programme to the audiences of TLC and Zoom. We believe that these two channels are great vehicles to communicate with the audience.

The ICBI ads have been appearing since 1st October on ?Style Star? a programme with immense popularity on TLC. The programme offers an inside look at the style evolution of favourite celebrities. The ads will also start appearing on the programme ?Oh My Gold? from 22nd October. Oh My Gold is an enchanting exploration of some of the most distinct jewellery and ornamental styles of India.

In addition, the ads will appear in a big way on Zoom TV repeating 22 times in a day from 15th October. The ads will also appear in associate sponsorship with 5 different programs on Zoom TV.

This move has been done after a careful study of audiences with interest in First Impressions and Image Management. Through these campaigns, we expect to build greater awareness in the audience about image management and image consulting and that they can turn to an image consultant?s advice or become an image consultant themselves.

ICBI is the pioneer institute, training image consultants in the art and science of image management. In addition, the institute provides comprehensive business, marketing and technical support for consultants to set up a successful image consulting business.

Govt to let Cubans travel freely - NewsOn6.com - Tulsa, OK - News ...

By ANDREA RODRIGUEZ and PETER ORSI
Associated Press

HAVANA (AP) - The Cuban government announced Tuesday that it will eliminate a half-century-old restriction that requires citizens to get an exit visa to leave the country.

The decree that takes effect Jan. 14 will eliminate a much-loathed bureaucratic procedure that has kept many Cubans from traveling or moving abroad.

"These measures are truly substantial and profound," said Col. Lamberto Fraga, Cuba's deputy chief of immigration, at a morning news conference. "What we are doing is not just cosmetic."

Under the new measure announced in the Communist Party daily Granma, islanders will only have to show their passport and a visa from the country they are traveling to.

It is the most significant advance this year in President Raul Castro's five-year plan of reforms that has already seen the legalization of home and car sales and a big increase in the number of Cubans owning private businesses.

Migration is a highly politicized issue in Cuba and beyond its borders.

Under the "wet foot, dry foot" policy, the United States allows nearly all Cubans who reach its territory to remain. Granma published an editorial blaming the travel restrictions imposed in 1961 on U.S. attempts to topple the island's government, plant spies and recruit its best-educated citizens.

"It is because of this that any analysis of Cuba's problematic migration inevitably passes through the policy of hostility that the U.S. government has developed against the country for more than 50 years," the editorial said.

It assured Cubans that the government recognizes their right to travel abroad and said the new measure is part of "an irreversible process of normalization of relations between emigrants and their homeland."

The decree still imposes limits on travel by many Cubans. People cannot obtain a passport or travel abroad without permission if they face criminal charges, if the trip affects national security or if their departure would affect efforts to keep qualified labor in the country.

Doctors, scientists, members of the military and others considered valuable parts of society currently face restrictions on travel to combat brain drain.

"The update to the migratory policy takes into account the right of the revolutionary State to defend itself from the interventionist and subversive plans of the U.S. government and its allies," the newspaper said. "Therefore, measures will remain to preserve the human capital created by the Revolution in the face of the theft of talent applied by the powerful."

On the streets of Havana, the news was met with a mixture of delight and astonishment. Officials over the years often spoke of their desire to lift the exit visa, but talk failed to turn into concrete change.

"No! Wow, how great!" said Mercedes Delgado, a 73-year-old retiree when told of the news that was announced overnight. "Citizens' rights are being restored."

"Look, I ask myself how far are we going to go with these changes. They have me a little confused because now all that was done during 50 years, it turns out we're changing it," said Maria Romero, a cleaning worker who was headed to her job Tuesday morning. "Everything they told us then, it wasn't true. I tell you, I don't understand anything."

Cuba-born U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen referred to the measure as "so-called reforms" that are "nothing more than Raul Castro's desperate attempts to fool the world into thinking that Cuba is changing.

"But anyone who knows anything about the communist 53- year-old Castro dictatorship knows that Cuba will only be free when the Castro family and its lackeys are no longer on the scene," the South Florida Republican said.

The Cuban government's decision to eliminate exit visas won't mean that Cubans can just get on a plane to the United States.

Kathleen Campbell Walker, an immigration lawyer in El Paso, Texas, said Cubans who fly to the United States are still required to get a State Department-issued visa. Homeland Security officials who review passenger lists for U.S.-bound flights are likely to order an airline to deny boarding to anyone who doesn't have that permission.

Cubans who do make it to the U.S., regardless of whether or not they have a visa, are generally admitted to the country.

"Our own visa requirements remain unchanged," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters Tuesday.

"We obviously welcome any reforms that'll allow Cubans to depart from and return to their country freely," said Nuland. "We remain committed to the migration accords under which our two countries support and promote safe, legal and orderly migration."

Under those 1994 accords between the two countries, Washington has encouraged Havana to take steps to prevent any future mass exodus.

Tomas Bilbao, executive director of the Washington-based Cuba Study Group, said he is cautiously optimistic that the move will reduce the isolation of the Cuban people and increase interaction between the U.S. and Cuban civil society.

"The important story is the Cuban government has taken a step that has long been demanded by the Cuban people," he said.

Omar Lopez, human rights director of the Miami-based Cuban American National Foundation, welcomed the elimination of the exit visas, but said it remained unclear whether the change will allow more Cubans to get passports.

"Now, Cubans don't have to pay and get a permit from Cuba to go as a tourist or a visitor, but they say that in order to get a passport you have to comply with some requirements of the law," Lopez said.

Dissident Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez expressed concern that officials might now control travel merely by denying passports.

Cuba has on occasion denied exit visas to government detractors when they sought to travel abroad, and Sanchez she has been turned down 20 times over the last five years.

"I have the suitcase ready to travel. ... Let's see if I get a flight for Jan. 14, 2013, to try out the new law.

The move eliminates a restriction in place since 1961, the height of the Cold War, requiring Cubans to get approval from their government for permission to leave their own country.

Cubans now will also not have to present the long-required letter of invitation from a foreign institution or person in the country they plan to visit.

The measure also extends to 24 months the amount of time Cubans can remain abroad, and they can request an extension when that runs out. Currently, Cubans lose residency and other rights including social security and free health care and education after 11 months.

Granma's editorial said the measure will help address the needs of the Cuban diaspora.

More than 1 million people of Cuban origin live in the United States, and thousands more are in Europe.

Private Student Loan Gripes Echo Mortgage Complaints - NYTimes ...

Gripes received about the handling of private student loans bear an ?uncanny resemblance? to complaints about mortgage servicing during the housing crisis, and the government should consider changes to address some of the problems, says the federal ombudsman for student loans.

Rohit Chopra, the loan ombudsman for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the author of a new report on private loans prepared for Congress, said yesterday that the bureau has received nearly 3,000 complaints about private student loans since March.

Unlike student loans made by the federal government, private loans lack some consumer protections, like income-based repayment plans to help borrowers manage payments, or deferments for military service. Many borrowers said they were never advised about the difference between a federal and private student loan and complained that they had not been fully informed of the terms of their loans.

The vast majority of the complaints related to servicing of the loans, like problems with fees, billing, deferments and forbearances. Many borrowers told the agency, for instance, that they had trouble getting their payments credited properly and obtaining accurate information about their loans from their servicing firms. They often ran into trouble when their loans were transferred or sold to different servicers.

The report notes that some borrowers reported problems with unauthorized payments, in cases where the borrower has a checking or savings account with the same institution that is servicing their loan. If the borrower was late with a payment, the bank might deduct the funds from the account automatically ? sometimes even charging an overdraft fee, if the payment overdrew the account.

In another instance, Mr. Chopra said, the agency heard from a borrower who was on time with payments but went into default because of a clause in the loan terms. A co-signer on the loan filed for bankruptcy, which caused the loan to go into default under the terms, even though the borrower wasn?t the one filing.

Many borrowers reported that they had tried to make ?good faith? payments toward their debt but were placed in default anyway.

A large majority of the complaints related to seven companies, with nearly half related to loans serviced by Sallie Mae. But Mr. Chopra noted that the company is a major player in making, servicing and collecting student loans, so the number of complaints ?does not seem particularly disproportionate.? Over all, he said, the distribution of complaints ?is not surprising,? given the companies? relative market share. (He also noted that the study is based mainly on borrower complaints and isn?t meant to be a statistically significant analysis of problems in the private loan industry.)

The largest share of complaints came from borrowers aged 22 to 29, suggesting that younger borrowers who have recently graduated into a tight job market are struggling, Mr. Chopra said.

Mr. Chopra?s report makes several general recommendations. Congress, he urges, should consider options that would allow student loan borrowers to modify or re-finance their loans at more attractive interest rates. It also suggests that other government officials ? specifically, the head of the consumer bureau, the Secretary of the Treasury and the Secretary of Education ? look into ways to improve servicing of such loans. The report also urges officials to consider broader application of income-based repayment plans already available for federal loans, to reduce the burden on students who also have private loans.

Have you had problems with private student loan? What was the outcome?

3 Photo Sharing Tactics That Stimulate Leads and Track Exposure ...

Visual artists and businesses of all kinds invest a great amount of time, talent and money into creating graphics that market their appeal. Whether it?s an infographic, illustration, humorous de-motivational or creative photograph, reaching out to consumers may not be the hardest part. Sharing enticing graphics is one thing, but spawning leads back from these works is another.

So what can we do to improve our business? fortune in photo sharing via social media and beyond? And how might we track its success?

Watermarking initiatives

We?ve all seen and heard the worst about digital watermarks on images: amateur photographers creating their very own logos and showcasing them through the most obnoxious and aesthetically-hindering translucent signatures.

But how often do businesses utilize watermarks when sharing over social media, and what benefits might it have?

Image Courtesy of Danielle Lavis Photography

The image above was found on Pinterest (among other watermarked photos), on the first results page (the 8th image displayed) from the search term ?photography? with 83 likes and 265 repins. It?s apparent that watermarks don?t have a negative effect on sharing as I initially expected they would. It?s also evident that watermarking is far from a rare practice on social media sites, especially visually-oriented ones.

Nature photographer Nate Zeman reported that when using large watermarks on his images, he noticed no decrease in the frequency of image sharing across the internet. ?It also didn?t seem to have any effect on the number of sites that were sharing my work. I?m still seeing my photos all over the place with the watermark on it,? said Zeman.

He uses watermarking in different ways depending on the website on which he shares a given photo. For social networking sites, Zeman adds a large and distinctive watermark to the middle of the image. This is because users on social media networks are the most likely to borrow and share photos, so Zeman ensures that his works can be traced back to him and his personal website.

On photography communities such as Flickr and 500px, he includes a smaller watermark for each image because photographer colleagues are far less inclined to perpetrate photo theft than an arbitrary internet socialite.

And on his own site, Zeman leaves his images watermark-free. This is so that visitors (and potential buyers) can have an optimal and undistracted viewing experience. He leaves photographs in his galleries decidedly low resolution so that anyone who would still be tempted to grab one of his unmarked graphics couldn?t pose much of a threat to the integrity of the originals.

Zeman explained that his ?funnel? strategy is aimed at ultimately bringing fans of his work to his personal page (where they can buy prints), drawing them in from shared content on third party sites.

The real lesson in Nate Zeman?s analysis of photo watermarking is that the traffic to his website was split nearly in half between direct links from outside sites and verbatim organic searches for the phrases he left in his watermarks. This means that people who were interested in his photos were frequently tracking him down through the brief plug in the watermarks.

As long as internet users continue to reuse photos, whether it?s technically legal or not in various contexts (hint: for the entire foreseeable future), then content creators, visual artists and marketers alike will be able to use this traditionally frowned-upon practice to their fiscal advantage.

Remember, even if an image thief isn?t going to buy your photo, someone on her page may be interested. Your watermark may be the only thing that?s going to direct them to your website, and in turn yield you possible income. (Notice the watermark on our image above!)

Metadata

It?s important to leave a trail of breadcrumbs, per se, when sharing visual works over the internet. As evidenced above, the way you?ll generate leads from said sharing initiatives or image thievery is from people linking back to your own site. And the only way they?ll know enough to look you up is if you provide them with the information.

While watermarking is perhaps the most straightforward and blatant way to give the customer information about yourself, including image metadata is a supplementary measure that provides necessary contact information and protects your virtual property interests.

If you?re new to metadata, it?s a relatively cut-and-dry concept. Every image file (a jpg, for example) contains text-based information that gives details about the graphic.

A wide variety of information can be stored in metadata. Here are a few highlights:

- Creator?s name, website, phone, address and country

- Copyright holder, rights and usage terms

- Caption information and headline

- Document rating

- Keywords

- Camera information (if the document is a photograph)

- GPS location

- Personalized instructions

There are many types of metadata. The most common is IPTC ?legacy?, which was originally created in the early 90s as one of the first (and still most widely recognized) schemas of metadata. I would personally encourage any graphic artist or copyright holder to include their information in as many metadata forms as possible, but if nothing else then IPTC should be considered the highest priority.

There are a slew of other metadata schemas including IPTC Core, PLUS, XMP and Exif. IPTC Core is a successor to the former legacy format, with added descriptive fields that are utilized by many stock photography shooters and agencies. PLUS generates a code that aids to identify information associated with the creators and copyright holder. XMP is a metadata format that can be stored either within the photo or as an accompanying file, and I?ve seen it used alongside RAW photo files in the past. Exif is a format used for photographs and stores shooting information such a camera and lens model, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length and GPS location so that users can identify them later on.

It is, however, worth noting that metadata won?t always stick around through repeated shares. Any given image file?s metadata is free to be altered (or completely wiped) through a number of methods and programs.

Despite the fact that metadata inclusion isn?t fool-proof, including personal information such as your name (at the least) and website is going to hint potential leads into where they can find you.

Reverse Image Search tracking

Once you?ve ensured that your images can be traced back to you and your website, it?s time to track your progress.

An extremely effective way to monitor photo sharing and reuse is through Google?s reverse image search function. It?s an easy tool to use that will yield valuable insight into who is using your photos and where they?re showing up.

To reverse-search an image, click on the camera icon in the Google image search bar:

From there you can upload a photo and keywords to the search:

A results page follows, listing each instance of the photo and visually-similar images on the internet:

This is a fantastic way to see where particular photos are getting the most attention. Reverse image search may also reveal illegal or otherwise unfavorable uses of your photos. If a company has used your image in an advertisement without your knowledge or permission, you?ll be able to see for yourself and take steps to liberate your work from competitors and imposters.

It is worth noting that there is an expected degree of delay between an image actually appearing somewhere and successful results on a reverse image search. Google (and every other search engine) has what we call ?spiders? that crawl around the internet, documenting new or previously unnoticed websites and their content. The spiders move as fast as they can, but the search results for newly-uploaded content will always be staggered until the spiders stumble across it.

In a world where image reuse is rampant, the contemporary visual artist needs to adapt or perish. So stop living in the dark ages; it?s time to be proactive and save yourself from lost opportunities.

If anyone already uses watermarks and/or metadata or tracks their photos via reverse image search, we?d love to hear what you have to say about your experience! Any tips or tricks? Let us know below.

Friends memorialize ex-Sen. Arlen Specter in Pa.

NARBERTH, Pa. (AP) ? Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter was an "irreplaceable" force who approached politics ? and life ? with grit and determination, a who's who of politicians and others said Tuesday at the longtime senator's funeral.

"I've never seen as much undaunted courage as Arlen had ? both physically and politically. He believed he could change the world, if he just worked hard enough at it," Vice President Joe Biden told mourners, including three Pennsylvania governors, federal judges and hundreds of friends, at Har Zion Temple in Narberth, a Philadelphia suburb.

Specter died at his suburban home on Sunday at 82 after battling non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He had spent 30 years in the Senate before losing his seat in 2010, after crossing party lines to vote for President Barack Obama's stimulus package and later switching parties.

"In a dark time for our nation, he was willing to lose his seat to cast a decisive vote," said Specter's son Shanin, whose remarks capped about 90 minutes of tributes.

U.S. District Judge Jan DuBois recalled how his friend approached everything in life "with intensity, determination and grit," managing to teach one last law class on Oct. 4 at the University of Pennsylvania, even as he was losing his third fight with cancer.

Specter's influence on law, medicine, politics, Judaism and other walks of life was clear from the diverse, bipartisan and powerful crowd of mourners, including Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, Republican Gov. Tom Corbett and rows dotted with current and former members of Congress, along with federal judges whose careers Specter backed.

Specter, a political moderate, switched parties twice but mostly served as a Republican. Speakers said he honed his respect for opposing viewpoints as a child, growing up in the only Jewish family in Russell, Kan.

"He really set the standard for working across party lines and we're going to miss that," said Casey, who said Specter had helped smooth his transition when he arrived in Washington.

Anthony J. Scirica, a judge on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, called Specter "irreplaceable."

"He touched so many lives," Scirica said. "He had some tough times, but he always thought that he was working for the public good."

Two of Specter's granddaughters also spoke, including Silvi Specter, a freshman at Penn who drew applause when she said she hopes to follow her grandfather into law and the U.S. Senate ? before becoming president.

Shanin Specter, a prominent Philadelphia lawyer, compared his father to the fictional character Forrest Gump, given Specter's proximity to so many seminal events in modern American history.

Specter served as counsel to the Warren Commission investigating President John F Kennedy's death. He won his Senate seat in the Reagan landslide of 1980 and, as one of the Senate's sharpest legal minds, took part in 14 Supreme Court confirmation hearings.

He grilled Anita Hill when the law professor raised sexual harassment complaints against then-Supreme Court nominee Anita Hill. That cost him some of the support he enjoyed from female voters, but, much like the stimulus vote, he felt it was the right thing to do, former Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell recalled.

All the while, Specter fought two earlier bouts with Hodgkin lymphoma, and overcame a brain tumor and cardiac arrest following bypass surgery.

His greatest legacy, his friends said, may be the $10 million in federal money he steered into cancer research.

"There are some things that even the most robust human spirit can't conquer," said Rendell, choking up.

Specter is also survived by his wife, Joan, son Steve and three other granddaughters.

31 Healthier Comfort Foods

As the weather gets chillier, cravings for cool, fresh ingredients diminish as those urges to eat ooey gooey warm goodness take over. Sugary oatmeal for breakfast? Sure, why not. Creamy soup for lunch? Don?t mind if we do. Casserole for dinner? Delicious!

Thankfully, craving comfort food doesn?t have to mean benching a healthy diet. Here are 32 classic comfort foods rethought with a balanced diet in mind. Bon app?tit!

Savory
Veggie Mac and Cheese

1. Veggie Mac and Cheese
It?s a classic childhood favorite, but when those cravings hit as an adult, throw in a load of fresh veggies to justify the choice. Spinach, tomatoes, peas, and broccoli make awesome additions. Extra credit for skipping the boxed mixes and making it all from scratch.

2. Shepard?s Pie
Ground beef, mashed potatoes, and cheese. What?s not to like? The trick with making this one healthier is to mix healthier stuff in with the potatoes (like cauliflower or parsnips) and fill the inside with plenty of veggies. Plus, with those subs made, you can still keep the full-fat butter and a little cheese without feeling so guilty!

3. Green Bean Casserole
Most family Thanksgivings wouldn?t be complete without this classic casserole. Trouble is, the cream of mushroom soup base and crunchy fried onion topper make it not such a healthy choice. Instead of using classic canned soup and those pre-packaged fried onions, opt for a low-sodium soup (or make your own), throw in some extra fresh mushrooms, and make your own crunchy onion topping.

4. Spaghetti and Meatballs
Mamma Mia! There?s nothing quite as comforting as a big bowl of spaghetti and homemade meatballs with tomato sauce. Instead of going for the classic pasta, take the healthier route and opt for whole-wheat or spaghetti squash as an alternative. As for the meatballs, try turkey as a substitution for classic beef, and make the sauce from scratch, too, to avoid any added preservatives, sugar, and sodium.

5. Mashed Potatoes
Rather than overload on carbohydrates with classic mashed potatoes, try a substitute that?s a little lower in carbs and much higher in protein (and antioxidants). This ?mock cauliflower? mix of mashed cannellini beans and cauliflower has the same texture as classic mashed potatoes, but with benefits far outweighing those of the original.

6. Meatloaf
The mix of pork and beef that goes into a classic meatloaf isn?t exactly the healthiest choice of protein. And the white bread doesn?t help either. Swapping in lean ground turkey and using oatmeal instead of white bread reduces the amount of fat in the dish and ups the fiber. Feeling creative? Throw some veggies in the mix: Grated carrots and finely minced onion and bell peppers can really raise the ?wow? factor.

7. Roast Chicken
There are few things more simple and comforting than a whole roast chicken straight from the oven. Those birds from the grocery store are often dripping in excess fat, but it?s easy to make your own perfect bird at home with extra veggies and less added fat. Try this easy recipe that pairs a bird with sweet potatoes, corn cobs, onions, garlic, rosemary, and lemon. It?s easy to throw together, and the only added fat is a hearty drizzle of heart-healthy olive oil.

8. Baked Beans
What BBQ would be complete without some baked beans? Unfortunately, all the slab bacon and brown sugar can make for a not-so-healthy side dish. Try this?healthier version?using ?liquid smoke? flavor instead of bacon, and a drizzle of agave for sweetness instead of brown sugar.

Pesto Pizza

9. Pizza
Contrary to the looks of those greasy pies hanging out in the local pizza parlor window, pizza?can?make a?healthy meal?? when it?s done right. Choose a whole-wheat, tortilla, or?cauliflower crust, and pile the veggies on high. Also opt for a strong-flavored cheese so the pie requires less of the melty stuff to get full flavor. (Check out 74 more ways to make pizza healthier here!)

10. Chicken Pot Pie
This particular healthier chicken pot pie recipe has been a favorite in my house for years. Instead of doing the traditional ?crust on top,? this recipe calls for individual puff-pastry squares prepared separately from the pie ?filling.? The filling is cooked on the stovetop and can be eaten alone, or with the puff pastry side. Plus, it?s packed full of veggies (the recipe calls for summer squash and snap peas, but feel free to get creative with winter squash and other greens). Consider swapping out the heavy cream for low-fat milk, too.

11. Chili
It?s football season, people! What?get together is complete without some home cooked chili? This turkey chili with chipotle and chocolate gives all the rich flavor of traditional beef chili with less fat. Plus, it?s packed with protein-rich beans along with onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes. The unsweetened cocoa powder also gives all the benefits of chocolate (tons of antioxidants) without all the sugar in a chocolate bar.

12. Fried Chicken
Sorry, kids. You?re not getting away with a ?healthy? deep fried chicken here. But, there is a way to make faux fried chicken in the oven and keep all the deliciousness intact (plus, it?s?Paleo!). What?s the secret??Coconut oil and almond flour. Brown in a pan, finish in the oven. Crispy and delicious drumsticks will emerge after about 20 minutes!

13. Sloppy Joes
Is there a more quintessentially middle-school meal than the classic sloppy Joe? Made with some?Manwich, perhaps? Instead of the classic red meat and tomato sauce mix on a white hamburger bun, try swapping in turkey meat, and serving it open-faced on half a whole-grain bun. Bonus: Make your own tomato sauce with as many veggies as possible ? carrots, onion, bell peppers, spinach, and mushrooms are sure to be a hit.

14. Chicken and Dumplings
Chicken and dumplings might be one of the most comforting meals out there. Seriously, what?s more delicious than a cream-filled stew base with floating pillows of dough??Make it healthier?by opting for lean chicken breasts only and packing the dish with extra veggies (more peas, please!). As for the dumplings, try making the dough with??whole-wheat?flour and throw in some chopped herbs for extra green (and flavor).

15. Burgers
Yes, indulging in a greasy, fat cheeseburger on a classic brioche bun is OK every once in a while. But for those more frequent burger urges, try something a bit healthier to fill the craving. These?black bean and quinoa burgers?are packed with protein and fiber. Throw these patties on a lettuce bun with some chopped sliced tomato and avocado and a dollop of homemade ketchup and you?ve got yourself a winner! Throw on a slice of sharp cheddar if you?re feeling indulgent.

16. Lasagna
Instead of classic lasagna noodles (which, lets face it, often take more work than it?s worth!), try layering thin strips of zucchini or eggplant. Also opt for homemade sauce, and throw some extra chopped veggies into the filling (whether it?s a vegetarian or meat lasagna).

17. Fries
Rather than gorge on a cone of classic fried spuds, try swapping in sweet potatoes. These orange cousins to classic taters are packed with carotenoids, which are great for improving?eye health.

18. Grilled Cheese
Bad news, friends: There will be no Wonderbread or Kraft singles in this recipe. To make the classic grilled cheese a bit healthier, choose whole-grain bread, toast in a dry pan (no butter or oil), and use a flavorful, high-quality cheese (so you don?t need to pile it on to get the great flavor). If that?s not healthy enough for ya, serve with a salad on the side, or add veggies to the sammie too.

19. Chicken Wings
A big plate of fiery hot chicken wings makes just about any sports-watching event more enjoyable. Unfortunately, their deep-fried preparation and unnecessary breading make them not such a healthy choice (not to mention how easy it is to eat plates full without looking back). Instead of going the fried route, try broiling wings without breading, relying just on hot sauce and some lemon juice for flavor.

Sweet

20. Pancakes
A classic short stack? Simple carb central, and not exactly the most exciting item on the breakfast menu. Amp them up with Greek yogurt, and you have something a bit more interesting (for the taste buds and waistline). Plus, the Greek yogurt is so flavorful, these cakes don?t require nearly as much maple syrup as classic versions (though we don?t blame you if it?s still habit to pour it on heavy!). Add chopped fruit or nuts to this mix for a more interesting outcome.

21. French Toast
Whoever first thought to make egg-soaked bread a hot breakfast item has our hearts forever. Boost this breakfast classic by using whole-grain cinnamon raisin bread, egg whites, and plenty of fresh fruit to top the whole thing. An extra sprinkle of cinnamon won?t hurt, either!

22. Apple Pie
Apple pie is just one of those things that will always scream ?comfort.? Cooking the pie filling in the actual apple is a great way to cut back on excess crust, but still get all the great flavor and texture. After scooping out the centers of the apple, cook the filling, refill the cored empty apple skins, and top with a few strips of crust. Voil?! Apple pie in apples.

Coffee Cake in a Mug

23.?Coffee Cake
This recipe?makes it easy to fill that indulgent coffee cake craving without making an entire pan (and risking accidently nibbling down the entire thing by the end of breakfast). It?s simple: Combine all the ingredients in a mug, microwave for a minute or two, and enjoy! Feel free to double fist with this one, too ? just make sure the second mug is for coffee and not another cake!

24. Ice Cream Sundae
It?s the go-to for heartbreak, disappointment, and plain old depression, so how dare we ruin it and reveal that the ice cream sundae can be made healthy? We promise you won?t regret swapping in pure banana ice cream, fresh fruit and roasted nut topping, and pure dark chocolate or natural peanut butter drizzle for the classic fixins?.

25. Cornbread
A southern classic, cornbread has become an icon for all things comfort food. Topped with a pat of butter and drizzle of honey? Even better. When craving this corn classic, steer clear of too much butter and unnecessary white flour filler. Instead, opt for a recipe like this one, using just six easy ingredients: pure cornmeal, baking powder, salt, eggs, milk, and just a little vegetable oil.

26. Brownies
At Greatist, we?ll take any excuse to add avocado to a recipe ? and brownies are the perfect opportunity.?Black bean brownies with avocado frosting take it even a step further by offering an extra dose of protein in addition to the awesome monosaturated fats from the avocado. (We promise, your friends will never guess the main ingredients in this recipe!)

27. Apple Crisp
The simpler cousin to apple pie, crisp is another great way to enjoy the season?s freshest apples and satisfy that sweet tooth. Simply toss apple slices in a bit of sugar, layer in a glass dish. Top with an oat crumble topping, bake for a few minutes, and voila! Cut back on sugar and butter amounts and add some extra cinnamon spice to make this recipe a bit healthier.

28.?Pumpkin Pie
This simple?pumpkin pie custard?is perfect for filling that common autumn craving for pumpkin pie. Missing the crust? Sprinkle some crushed graham crackers over the top, and all is well again! The custard is super simple, simply combining pumpkin, milk, eggs, and spices to create the perfect crust-less treat.

29. Belgian Waffles
We had to throw pumpkin back into this list somehow! Adding pureed pumpkin to waffle (or pancake) mix is a great way to sneak in another serving of veggies. Add some protein powder , too, and you have a super-healthy way to start any day.

30. Chocolate Chip Cookies
The easiest way to amp up chocolate chip cookies? Add quinoa, flaxseed, and banana, and opt for dark chocolate chips.? The quinoa adds a dose of protein and banana gives the cookies sweetness without much added sugar.

31.?Birthday Cake
Everyone deserves to indulge on their birthday, but that doesn?t mean it?s a pass to gorge on leftover cake all week long! The best way to celebrate with style and not feel guilty later is to pack that cake full of produce. A harvest cake (this one?s filled with carrots, zucchini, beets, walnuts, and raisins) is a great way to fit in another serving of veggies and satisfy that sweet tooth without ruining that healthy-eating streak.

Asia stocks fall as China easing hopes dim

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets were mostly lower Monday as hopes dimmed for aggressive moves by China to stimulate its slowing economy.

China's consumer price index for September rose 1.9 percent from a year earlier, easing from August's 2 percent rise, but analysts said closer examination of the figures suggest China's government and central bank will be cautious about doing more to boost growth in the world's No. 2 economy.

Dariusz Kowalczyk at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said non-food inflation accelerated to a seven-month high of 1.7 percent, an indication of underlying price pressure that "reduces the odds of further monetary easing."

He said an interest rate cut by the central bank is unlikely although a reduction in the reserve ratio requirement ? the ratio of cash that banks must keep on hand ? might be possible later this year.

Kowalczyk said the producer prices index, which measures inflation at the wholesale level and fell 3.6 percent from the year before, was another negative signal since it is indicative of a weak level of economic activity.

"A combination of growth softness and less room to ease policy stance is a negative and should weigh on sentiment today," he said.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index vacillated between positive and negative territory until moving 0.5 percent higher at 8,579.34.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.1 percent to 21,110.10. South Korea's Kospi fell 0.6 percent to 1,921.74. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 0.1 percent to 4,482.50. Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.5 percent to 2,094.47 and the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 1 percent at 857.16.

Concerns about global economic growth ? especially the direction of China's economy ? hurt Australian mining shares since Australia is a major exporter of iron ore and other minerals to China. Rio Tinto Ltd. lost 1.1 percent, Newcrest Mining fell 2.2 percent and Fortescue Metals Group tumbled 3.5 percent.

Falling gold prices hurt shares of related companies. Hong Kong-listed Zijin Mining Co., China's largest gold miner, fell 2.5 percent.

Japanese mobile phone company Softbank fell 5 percent after news reports said it had agreed to buy 70 percent of Sprint Nextel Corp. for $20 billion.

Still, investors found deals among Japanese blue chips. Honda Motor Corp. jumped 4.2 percent. Toyota Motor Corp. gained 2.1 percent. Toshiba Corp. rose 2.7 percent.

"Decent exporters are being bought and I think that makes sense," said Benjamin Collett, head of Japanese equities at Louis Capital Markets in Hong Kong.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was down 69 cents to $91.17 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

In currency trading, the euro fell to $1.2905 from $1.2958 late Friday in New York. The dollar rose to 78.54 yen from 78.38 yen.

Israel?s assassination two days ago of the leader of Gaza's growing salafi underground highlights how the rising activity of Al Qaeda-inspired militants in Gaza and the adjacent Sinai peninsula in Egypt is threatening years of relative calm with Israel.?The small militant network which, according to Hamas, is acting independently, has been launching rocket attacks from Gaza with increasing frequency and linking up with militants in Egypt?s Sinai desert to plot ambushes across the formerly quiet border with Israel.

With both the Hamas government in Gaza and the new Islamist leaders in Egypt focused on building up their respective economies, neither wants to be dragged into a conflict with Israel.

"[Hamas] wants to focus on solving the daily life problems of Gaza?. The new rulers of Egypt are not interested in escalation with Israel, either. They are more interested in finding a solution,"?says Mkahimer Abusada, a political science professor at Al Azhar University in Gaza.

"Any Israeli escalation against the Salafis and any counter-response puts Hamas under pressure in Gaza."

Resistance or development?

As Hamas tries to balance its reputation as leader of the Palestinian "resistance" and its duties to promote development in Gaza ? which requires a degree of moderation ? the salafis, an ultraconservative Islamist movement, have been able to attract disillusioned Hamas followers with their mix of religious fundamentalism, extreme militancy, and a growing record of attacks.

"Although Hamas was quite ambivalent about the spread of jihadist ideas, now they face the consequences of not dealing with this head on ? [Salafis] want to drag the sides into all-out confrontation, which will serve their political goals, but it stands in contrast to Hamas?s goals of stabilizing Gaza and not getting into a conflict," says Anat Kurtz, an expert on Palestinian politics and society at the Institute for National Security Studies, a think tank affiliated with Tel Aviv University.

Two days ago, Israeli forces killed Hisham Saidani, one of the leaders of Gaza's underground salafi movement. The Israel Defense Forces said he was responsible killing for two IDF soldiers in 2009 and was planning a new Sinai attack.?

iTunes and iTunes Match users still having issues with iOS 6

Are you experiencing issues with iTunes and/or iTunes Match?

Since the release of iOS 6, our forums and tip lines have been buzzing with issues relating specifically to iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match. Issues seem to range from iTunes Match expiration notices, sync issues with ringtones and text tones via iTunes, and slow performance when it comes to streaming music.

iTunes Match issues

  • iTunes Match sending out expiration notices to iOS devices even though their computer still says the subscription is valid. I've personally been experiencing this issue myself. Devices running iOS 5 seem to not have the issue. While my iPhone 5 will not load iTunes Match and tells me it's expired, my iPhone 4S running iOS 5.1.1 works flawlessly with Match. After quite a bit of time on the phone with Apple, they still weren't able to pinpoint the issue.

  • iTunes Match streaming slowly or many users experiencing a lot of lag when switching between songs.

  • Album artwork missing or not showing up on certain albums, even purchased from iTunes content.

iTunes specific issues

  • Syncs hanging up on Waiting on items to copy or Waiting for sync to start. We've had many users experiencing this issue, perhaps even before iOS 6. We aren't exactly sure what's causing the issue, but if you're experiencing it, let us know.

  • iTunes removing ringtones and text tones from devices and not syncing them back. This is another one I've personally experienced and have found many others in the same boat not only in our own forums but in Apple's support forums as well. Once iTunes removes the text tones and ringtones they don't seem to want to sync back over. The only way I've found to deal with the issue is to restore my iPhone as new and restore from an iCloud backup that contains the ringtones and text tones iTunes deleted.

We're going to start trouble-shooting them in the forums, so head on over and either start a thread with your specific issue or, if a thread already exists, add what you're seeing into it. We'll keep track of the problems and start sharing solutions. Pick a forum below, add you post, and lets crush this.
