Watch Facebook?s Sheryl Sandberg Deliver Her Speech To Harvard Business School Graduates

Sheryl Sandberg Harvard Business SchoolIt has been a week since the Facebook IPO, with a whole lot of drama in the aftermath about the glitch with Nasdaq (and the legal implications), and questions about how much traders have lost?as a result, while the share price has fallen: from a start of $38 it is now $32.79 in pre-market trading. But in a speech earlier this week to the 2012 graduating class of Harvard Business School, Facebook's COO Sheryl Sandberg steered very clear of these topics. Instead, as you can see in the video we have embedded below, we got a pretty good (and in my opinion pretty inspiring) speech: quite a few Facebook references but not directly about the business itself, and a lot of talk about remaining honest, and the role of women at the highest level of business.

Easy Blogging With Dragon Dictation | Dragon Dictation Review

Dragon DictationIf like me you struggle with blogging and creative writing in general I have a little secret to share with you. I have been blogging on various websites for the last three years and have recently discovered a blog writing technique which I would like to share with you.

I have tried traditional blogging and creative writing processes such as brainstorming before you write, searching for inspiration from other bloggers and even video blog production. All of which are very time consuming when done correctly.

I have recently discovered a great little app in the Apple app store for the iPad two, Dragon dictation.

Dragon Dictation Review

With Dragon dictation you simply speak into the microphone of your iPad and the software will recognise your words and produce a written document for you. This is fantastic! The time it saves while blogging is immense, I can literally produce two or three blog posts in the time it would take to produce one with the traditional methods i.e. writing and typing. I would advise you still do some degree of research before speaking as preparation is key to success with many things online including blogging.

The makers of the application nuance communications claim that the process of dictating into the microphone is five times faster than typing on the iPad keypad, I tend to agree with them as well. I just wish I had discovered this technique earlier as it would have saved me many nights toiling away with pad and pen planning and researching my blog posts.

Social Media Integration

You can even update your social media statuses via Dragon dictation, update your Facebook profile and even dictate your 140 characters to your Twitter account.

It would be amazing if you could dictate directly to a WordPress blog or other blogging platform.

Three Slight Problems I Have Found So Far.

Firstly if you do not speak slowly and clearly the application will struggle to understand what you have said, this is very similar to the problems found with Siri on the? iPhone 4S.

Secondly when you are at the bottom of the screen and have ran out of paper it is very difficult to add additional lines to your document without accidentally bringing up the keyboard, also when you try to manually edit the text using the keyboard if you are already at the bottom of the page the keyboard will cover the last few lines of your document so you have to then scroll with your finger and double tap where you want to edit the page.

To get around this problem I would advise that when you start a new dictation hit return for five times on the keyboard to add some empty line breaks at the bottom of your document this seems to help.

Finally every so often there is a banner advert which appears at the bottom of the screen this is downright annoying, but as this app is free I can live with it.

Available for?

Dragon Dictation is available for PC, MAC, iPhone & iPad.

http://www.nuance.com/dragon/index.htm

To Sum Up

Okay my final thoughts on this technique using dragon dictate for blogging are:

1) there is no doubt that it saves time in the producing blog posts.
2) it is extremely easy to use and you can begin producing documents within minutes.
3) voice recognition is very good if you speak clearly and calmly
4) there are a few books to iron out with the version I am using but I am hopeful future versions will address the issues I have found.
5) this is a fantastic free app, I would highly recommend this to anybody who struggles with blog writing.

Somalia, African Union forces attack Islamist-held camp

The effort is to push the Islamist militia Al Shabab further away from the outskirts of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, but aid workers worry that displaced civilians in Afgoye camp may get caught in crossfire.

A major offensive aimed at clearing Somalia?s Al Qaeda-allied?Islamist?army from the world?s largest camp for displaced people began Tuesday, amid fears that civilians could end up in the firing line.?

Columns of Somali National Army troops with African Union peacekeepers launched the attack soon after sunrise along a major road heading northwest from Mogadishu, the Somali capital.??

Their aim, the AU?s most senior official in Somalia said, was to ?build security? so that the 400,000 people squatting on?Islamist-controlled territory outside the city would find it easier to be reached by aid agencies.?The area, known as the?Afgoye?corridor, remains under the rule of Al Shabab, a radicalized fighting force bent on routing Somalia?s Western-backed government and ruling the country according to a strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Al Shabab has banned most international aid groups from working in its territory, despite the ongoing effects of last year?s famine and threats of further severe hunger after failed crops this year.?

?The?Afgoye?corridor holds one of the biggest concentrations of internally displaced people in the world,? said?Wafula?Wamunyinyi, who heads the AU peacekeeping mission in Somalia, known as?AMISOM.??We are helping them by building security so that they can share in the economic revival of the capital. They will now be able to access humanitarian services and eventually return to their original homes in Mogadishu.??

Mogadishu has seen its longest period of peace in many years recently, since the AU contingent ? made up mostly of Ugandan and Burundian soldiers ? forced Al Shabab from the capital last year.?Where once there were daily mortar and small-arms battles along?frontlines?running down the city?s main streets, now it is rare to hear sustained gunfire.?

Businesses are starting, markets are flourishing, and schools and clinics are reopening.?

But there are still regular suicide attacks by bombers sent by Al Shabab, including one last month at the newly reopened Somali National Theater, which killed 10 people.?

Many of those attackers are believed to come from the area around?Afgoye, and AU commanders hope that Tuesday?s offensive, which is likely to last several days, will force them further from Mogadishu?s outskirts.?But there were concerns that fighting in such a crowded area could lead to ordinary people being caught up in the conflict, or?Islamist?fighters melting into the population.?

One aid worker in Nairobi, capital of neighboring Kenya, warned, however, that taking the battle to?Al Shabab where there were so many civilians living in flimsy shelters was a substantial risk.?

?It could be truly dreadful if Shabab pull back into the [internally displaced people?s] camps and start launching their fightback from there,? she said, refusing to give her name or organization because she was not authorized to talk to the media.??It?s true that we need to reach those people, it?s a desperate situation there. But it will be a disaster if people we need to treat for malnutrition suddenly really need treating for gunshots, mortar wounds, or other battlefield injuries.??

Lt. Gen. Andrew?Gutti,?AMISOM?s force commander, said that the attack had been ?designed to?minimize?the harm to the population.??

?During this joint operation?AMISOM?is taking every precaution to prevent harm or injury to civilians,? he said.??We will only fight when attacked by the Al Shabab terrorists. We ask the population of the?Afgoye corridor to continue to stay in their places of residence, avoid unnecessary travel on main roads, and not to stray far from their homes.??

Abdisamad?Moalim?Mohamoud, Somalia?s interior minister, said late Tuesday that government forces had made ?a great achievement? during the first day of the offensive, taking the towns of?Garasbaley and?Daynile?from?Al Shabab.?

But Islamist commander?Sheikh?Fuad?Mohamed?Khalaf?told Mogadishu?s Radio Al?Andalus?that ?the crusade forces from Burundi and Uganda and their Somali puppets launched an offensive, they were pushed back, they were given a lesson enough.??

?They left bodies and destroyed military trucks, we will show them to the media later today,? he added.?

Eyewitnesses, however, said that they had seen at least five dead?Al Shabab fighters, and one casualty from the government forces.?

?Al Shabab was pushed back, they lost a good distance to the government forces, I saw five of their bodies, the government forces were kicking them,? said Osman?Hilibi, who lives close to?Garasbaley.?

At least 45 arrests, some injuries in Chicago anti-NATO clashes

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Four police officers were injured and 45 demonstrators arrested after baton-wielding police clashed with anti-war protesters marching on the NATO summit in Chicago on Sunday, police said.

A lawyer's group assisting protesters challenged police figures, saying at least 12 protesters were hurt, some with head wounds from police batons, and more than 60 people detained.

The confrontation began after a 2 1/2 mile march from a Chicago park to near the site of the summit, where leaders of the NATO alliance are discussing the war in Afghanistan.

Chicago Police Chief Garry McCarthy defended police tactics.

"I know that picture (of officers in riot gear pushing and hitting protesters) is going to be what people are going to run away here with," McCarthy told reporters. "But cops are not here to be assaulted."

Most of the officers sustained minor injuries, but one was stabbed in the leg, McCarthy said.

While the melee at the end of the rally received the most attention, the situation had calmed down by dark.

The size of the protests over the last week fell short of expectations. Police estimated about 3,000 people attended on Sunday, although many participants thought the crowd was larger. Organizers did not get the 10,000 people they had hoped for, or the 40,000 the anti-Wall Street Occupy movement boasted it would attract.

On Sunday afternoon, police ordered the protesters to disperse or risk arrest. Most of the demonstrators did, but several hundred ignored the order and police moved in.

Hundreds of demonstrators, reporters and photographers were hemmed in by lines of blue-helmeted police, pushing them back with plastic shields.

One young man sat at the side of the street, the back of his head streaming blood. His friends said he was hit by riot police.

"This is what police brutality looks like," said Ryan Zielinski, 23, a protester who said he was hit in the chest with a baton as police pushed protesters back. "All we're trying to do is protest and the police are attacking us."

McCarthy said officers had endured numerous profane taunts and showed restraint. But he said police would not tolerate assaults by black-clad anarchists.

"What we saw is these guys rally their courage and say, 'OK, let's go. That's what we came here for.' And I have to say to myself, what are you thinking?" McCarthy said.

The march included people in festive costumes, a few parents pushing strollers and veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Demonstrators had little chance of being seen by the world leaders and representatives from 60 countries at the meeting of the military alliance. The summit site, the McCormick Place convention center, is inside a security zone guarded by high fences. Protesters were kept blocks away.

President Barack Obama, who is hosting the summit in his hometown, convened the summit to chart a path out of the unpopular war in Afghanistan.

The Coalition Against NATO-G8, the group organizing Sunday's march, wants an immediate end to the U.S. role in the Afghan war. Other protesters decried U.S. defense spending and economic inequality.

Matt Howard, a former U.S. Marine who served in Iraq, was one of nearly 50 veterans who threw service medals into the street near the summit site in protest.

Vietnam War veteran Ron McSheffery, 61, said, "I'm in total support of stopping NATO and stopping the slaughter of innocent civilians. If we took the money we spent on bombs and put it into green energy, we wouldn't need to keep the sea lanes open" for oil transport.

Before the summit began, five men were arrested on terrorism-related or bomb-making charges. Three of those charged were plotting to attack Obama's campaign headquarters, police stations and other targets, according to court documents. Defense lawyers said the three were entrapped by police informants.

Oil prices will rise, Iran says, if embargo comes

Oil prices will go up if European Union goes through with a total embargo on Iranian crude in July, Iran's economy minister says. IMF has warned oil prices could rise as much as 30 percent if Iran halts exports.

Iran's economy minister said oil prices will "certainly" rise if the European Union moves ahead with an embargo in July and that sanctions will backfire on those who impose them.

The European Union is preparing for a total embargo on the purchase of Iranian crude oil in July. The United States has also imposed sanctions targeting Iran's energy and banking sectors.

Iran's economy minister, Shamseddin Hosseini, was asked in an interview conducted Thursday and aired Sunday on CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS" whether oil prices would rise substantially if the European Union moved forward with the oil embargo.

"Certainly, certainly. Even the IMF says that as a result of these sanctions, oil prices will perhaps reach and hover around $160 per barrel. And the decrease in financial and economic output in Europe will truly be felt," Hosseini said through a translator.

In January, the International Monetary Fund warned that global crude prices could rise as much as 30 percent if Iran halted oil exports as a result of U.S. and European Union sanctions.

The sanctions are aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions. The West suspects Iran's nuclear program is aimed at developing weapons, while Iran says it is for peaceful energy purposes.

The director general of the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency was to meet with Iran's chief nuclear negotiator in Tehran on Monday, two days before Iran meets with six world powers in Baghdad.

Hosseini warned that sanctions will create an "economic backlash" against the countries that impose them.

"We believe that those who impose the sanctions have exerted the maximum level of pressure they have been capable of," he said. "The economic strength of Iran is in such a way that can withstand these sanctions and will not be the only economy to suffer."

Asked what the price of oil will be in August, Hosseini said, "we must, at least, in order to have sustainable growth for the producers, maintain prices of $100 per barrel."

"But keep in mind the following: can the industrial powers get out of the current situation they're in with these prices? Therefore, the answer being obvious, the prices will go considerably higher than $100 per barrel," he said.

"If we see reforms, tangible reforms in this behavior, we will be in a much better place. If we don't, we will witness an increase in international oil markets."

Palestinians see settlements thwarting state

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Surrounded by aides, including one whose only task seems to be light his cigarettes, Mahmoud Abbas sits in a vast presidential office and speaks of his ambition to create a Palestinian state.

But outside his sprawling compound on the hills of the West Bank town of Ramallah reality on the ground is different - his dream is being built over by ever-expanding Jewish settlements.

From Ramallah to the sacred city of Jerusalem 20 km (12 miles) away, and all across the West Bank, the sprawling new communities, perched on hilltops that dominate the landscape, are testament to a shifting political geography and a reminder of the 64-year-old conflict and its winners and losers.

As Abbas resists pressure to resume talks on statehood until Israel halts construction, some Palestinians say he is too late to secure a viable national territory - partly because Yasser Arafat, his predecessor, failed to grasp the challenge of the settlements when he agreed an interim peace nearly 20 years ago.

"There will be no Palestinian state," said Khalil Tafakji, a geographer who advised Arafat but says the late PLO leader, in exile for much of his life, did not appreciate how far Israelis had gone by the early 1990s in permanently colonizing the West Bank and East Jerusalem, captured in war from Jordan in 1967.

"Look at the facts on the ground," Tafakji told Reuters last week as he reviewed maps of Israeli towns and infrastructure, which the United Nations deems illegal on occupied land: "There is no geographic contiguity between Palestinian villages and cities," he said. "They have expanded settlements, built bridges and tunnels. We now have two states inside one state."

Aside from its tightening grip on Arab East Jerusalem, Israel now directly controls about 58 per cent of the West Bank, while the rest is administered by Abbas's Palestinian Authority.

The Oslo peace accords of 1993 left it to future negotiators to agree the "final status" of the division of territory between Israel and a Palestinian state. Failure to reach agreement has, in effect, left Israel drawing up its own map of the future.

GLOOMY VIEW

Nabil Shaath, a senior figure in the Palestine Liberation Organization and a veteran of peace negotiations going back decades, concurs with Tafakji's gloomy view of "facts on the ground" making it ever harder to establish a state:

"Every day we lose territory on the ground, we lose sovereignty, we lose people," he said in Ramallah, where the Authority is based, in the hope of one day being able to set up a Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem. "They are grabbing as much land as possible to control the situation on the ground.

"Israel should not change the status quo on the ground during the negotiations," Shaath argued. "They should cease settlement building and any violation of the Oslo accord.

"But they want to draw the map of their land grab."

Tafakji reckons it might have been possible a decade ago to share Jerusalem with Israel but says that is no longer the case due to a policy of settling Jews in - and around - the Arab East, including the Old City revered by three religions, as well as legal moves to bar Palestinian residents of Jerusalem from returning to the city if they spend time living abroad.

"Today you cannot divide Jerusalem," he said. "It is impossible," he added noting how Israeli settlers were moving in to houses inside mainly Arab-populated city neighborhoods.

Palestinians are adamant that the east of the city they call al-Quds will be capital of a state they demand on less than a quarter of what was British-ruled Palestine before the establishment of Israel in 1948.

Their national dream is endorsed by fellow Arabs and bolstered by the spiritual aspirations of a billion Muslims to regain control around the third holiest site in Islam.

But for Israelis the entire city, Yerushalayim in Hebrew, is the "eternal and indivisible" capital of the Jewish state, the home the Jews dreamed of throughout 2,000 years of bitter exile.

"THE SHARON MAP"

The ruling Likud party of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come round to accepting the Oslo concept of a "two-state solution". But he rejects dividing Jerusalem and, while willing to redraw borders and give up some settlements, wants Israel to keep a security cordon around the West Bank in perpetuity.

For Tafakji, the settlement enterprise that has now matured long predates the Oslo process and the hopes it raised for a peaceful resolution of a century-long conflict between Arabs and Jews over how to share the land.

That story begins in 1978 when Matitiyahu Drobless, head of the World Zionist Organization Settlement Division, prepared a first comprehensive plan for the establishment of colonies throughout the West Bank with a settler population intended to reach 1 million. For many Zionists, disappointed by partition of Palestine in 1948, victory in the Six Day War of 1967 was the chance to build a greater Israel across the whole territory.

The Drobless Plan for the hill country stretching 40 or so miles north and south of Jerusalem, known as the West Bank internationally or in Israel by the Biblical names of Judea and Samaria, was to scatter Jewish communities along the heights around Palestinian towns and cities.

Now numbering some 340,000, and growing at 4.3 percent last year, that Israeli settler population is a mix of people who see the West Bank offering cheaper housing and an easy commute to Tel Aviv or Jerusalem and those who see themselves as pioneers exercising an ancestral right to the lands.

While many of the other six million Israelis are ambivalent about the settlements, which few ever visit, the drive to expand them acquired real momentum in the early 1980s when then defense minister Ariel Sharon drew up a grand plan known as Military Order No. 50. Later, like Netanyahu, the leader of Likud, Sharon ordered a network of roads through and around Jerusalem that connected settlements and separated Arab villages and districts.

Already in the "Sharon map" of the 1980s, said the cartographer Tafakji, the outlines of what have now become more than 200 isolated, Palestinian-administered areas were defined by the routes of the Israelis-only highway network: "If you transpose all the roads onto one map you can see the cantons clearly, in the north, in the south, inside Jerusalem," he said.

Sharon, by then housing minister, developed further a plan to ensure control of Jerusalem before the Oslo process got under way by surrounding East Jerusalem with four major settlement blocs - looming from the West Bank hills, some said, like modern Crusader castles.

NO LONGER POSSIBLE?

Addressing parliament in 1991, Sharon explained: "We have set for ourselves a goal of guaranteeing that in Jerusalem, the capital of the Jews and the eternal capital of Israel, there will be a Jewish majority.

"We are proceeding today with a far-reaching vision that in the greater Jerusalem area there will be a million Jews."

Today, some two thirds of the 750,000 population of the Jerusalem municipality are Jewish, about 200,000 of those in East Jerusalem, where about 250,000 Palestinians also live.

For Tafakji, Sharon has succeeded: "As a technician, not a politician, I say that a Palestinian state is no longer possible when you look at the facts on the ground."

He said Arafat, whom he advised during the Oslo talks and who died in 2004, never fully grasped the scope and ambition of the settlement enterprise: "When he entered into negotiations I think Arafat had no idea about facts or settlements."

Arafat agreed to leave resolving the fate of settlements for the "final status" negotiations. "They did not freeze settlement building," Tafakji recalls of the Oslo negotiators. Since then, Israel has built 38,000 new housing units on occupied land.

"I told Arafat ... that a Palestinian state was no longer possible," Tafakji said, forecasting that Netanyahu's new unity coalition will go on consolidating Israeli control in Jerusalem and beyond to make "the West Bank look like Swiss cheese".

Like many Palestinians, who have also seen the other part of their territory, the Gaza Strip on the coast, taken over by Hamas Islamists who reject Abbas's control, Tafakji fears the statehood project is doomed: "You see, there is no peace here, there is no hope," he said, musing only on a miracle of Jerusalem proportions: "Maybe Jesus will come to the Third Temple."

TIME IS RUNNING OUT

While the many Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem await the second coming of Jesus in the city, many Jews pray for the rebuilding of their Biblical Temple, the second and last of which was razed by the Romans.

Not everyone agrees with Tafakji's assessment and some diplomats in the city say a separate Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem can still be envisaged. Maps do exist, as to elaborate plans for public transport routes cutting across "foreign" land by means of bridges and tunnels to link districts together.

However, few disagree that time is rapidly running out, with settlement building to the south of the city, towards Bethlehem, set to further isolate Arab neighborhoods.

Abbas told Reuters he would not return to the negotiations without Israel freezing settlement activities. He said Netanyahu must realize they were destroying hopes of peace and must cease.

The Israeli prime minister says his government is building less than previous administrations and argues that recent construction is focused on expanding neighborhoods in existing settlements, rather than creating new blocs.

His office also stresses that the actual settlements take up just 3 percent of the total West Bank territory. However, Israeli map experts say these Jewish communities take up closer to 8 or 10 percent, once industrial and agricultural areas which are under direct Jewish control are taken into account.

Netanyahu says the issue should be resolved in face-to-face talks, giving no indication he is ready to accept Palestinian conditions that settlement building halt before they resume.

Western diplomats in the city tend to agree with Abbas that the settlements are a major hurdle. Arguing that it was hard not to conclude that Israel was deliberately seeking to break up the West Bank into separate Palestinian "cantons", one senior diplomat said: "Settlements are unbelievably corrosive. It destroys any faith on the Palestinian side that they are serious and totally corrodes international sentiment."

PFT: Bears' Marshall cleared in NY, lawyer says

mike-tannenbaumGetty Images

Jets G.M. Mike Tannenbaum joined PFT Live on Thursday to discuss a broad range of topics, including the one that everyone wants to discuss.

Backup quarterback Tim Tebow.

I asked Mike whether the reaction to the trade for Tebow was even bigger than the Jets had anticipated.

?We had a good idea of what we were getting ourselves into,? Tannenbaum said.? ?Tim?s a pretty unique person with a very unique following.? And when we made the decision from a football standpoint ? and, you know, that?s our charge, and [owner] Woody [Johnson] always reiterates that and we sat down with Coach [Tony] Sparano and [head coach] Rex [Ryan] ? we felt like by far this was the best opportunity for us to try to get back to some of the diversity we want to do on offense, running different types of plays. And we just thought it was a great opportunity, and I felt like from my standpoint, Mike, that we should be able to create the infrastructure where Tim [and] the rest of his teammates could be successful, and we can manage the distractions.?

So, basically, the Jets are embracing Tebowmania.? Or, at a minimum, it?s not causing them to hide under the bed.? Yet.

?When you make a move like this, you know there?s going to be a lot of people that are going to follow him, but we don?t look at that as a negative.?

Tannenbaum said more about Tebow, even though the G.M. declined to delve into all of the ways that Tebow will be used on special teams by a coordinator who recently described Tebow as more potent that former Jets jack-of-all-trades Brad Smith.? You can check out the Tebow related clip below.? The full interview can be seen by clicking the link in the right rail, or by clicking the ?PFT Live? button above.

Daniels defeats Bush to remain Tepid Endorsement Champ

After a hard-fought battle, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels has held off a challenge from former President George W. Bush to defend his title as the winner of the Ticket's Tepid Romney Endorsement tournament. By a vote of 3,110 to 2,748, readers preferred Daniels' scornful characterization of Romney as out of touch with the middle class?delivered in an interview hours after he endorsed the former Massachusetts governor?over Bush's terse "I'm for Mitt Romney."
Bush v. Daniels

All Tepid Romney Endorsements:

"I'm for Mitt Romney," Bush told ABC News Tuesday morning as the doors of an elevator closed on him.
?Former President?George W. Bush, May 15, 2012

"Now is the time for Republicans to unite behind Governor Romney and take our message of fiscal conservatism and job creation to all voters this fall."
?Former Florida Gov.?Jeb Bush, March 21, 2012

"With all due respect to my fellow conservative leaders determined to oppose Governor Romney, that is not a worthy endeavor. For the sake of our Republic, I'm not willing to wait until the Republican National Convention to sort this out. It's time to unite behind a worthy presidential candidate, build our organization and raise the resources necessary to defeat the liberal electoral machine."
?American Conservative Union Chairman?Al Cardenas, March 26, 2012

"You have to campaign to govern, not just to win... Spend the precious time and dollars explaining what's at stake and a constructive program to make life better. And as I say, look at everything through the lens of folks who have yet to achieve. Romney doesn't talk that way... You don't change one thing about the policies you advocate or your principles... It's not complicated. But for some reason sometimes candidates just miss that."
?Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, April 19, 2012

"While I also admire his opponents, it is now clear that Mitt Romney is the candidate most able to defeat Barack Obama in November. This election is too important to lose and that's why I urge my fellow Republicans to join me in supporting Mitt Romney."
?Former Hewlett-Packard CEO?Carly Fiorina, March 26, 2012

"I'm asked sometimes, Is Mitt Romney conservative? And my answer is simple: Compared to Barack Obama? This is not a choice between Mitt Romney and Ronald Reagan. This is a choice between Mitt Romney and the most radical leftist president in history."
?Former Speaker?Newt Gingrich, May 2, 2012

"I believe it is now time for our party to unite around the candidate best equipped to defeat Barack Obama. Despite our differences and the space between us on some of the issues, I believe that candidate is Gov. Mitt Romney."
?Former Utah Gov.?Jon Huntsman, Jan. 16, 2012

"This is a pretty critical year. There are big decisions for the country to make and ... I think we would be well-advised as Republicans to start getting behind our eventual nominee."
?Utah Sen.?Mike Lee, March 25, 2012

"Now Mitt is not a perfect candidate. He has a number of problems. It's hard for blue-collar families like mine to identify with him. It's hard for economic conservatives to identify with him. He needs to do more to reach out to the Latinos. But I think he has the focus on that and on defeating President Obama as opposed to winning the next primary in the next state, and it's time to do that."
?Former New York Gov.?George Pataki, March 7, 2012

"There are a lot of other people out there that some of us wish had run for president?but they didn't. I think Mitt Romney would be a fine president, and he'd be way better than the guy who's there right now."
?Florida Sen.?Marco Rubio, March 29, 2012

"The primary campaign certainly made it clear that Governor Romney and I have some differences. But there are many significant areas in which we agree. ... Above all else, we both agree that President Obama must be defeated. The task will not be easy. It will require all hands on deck if our nominee is to be victorious. Governor Romney will be that nominee."
?Former Pennsylvania Sen.?Rick Santorum, May 8, 2012

"The Republican Party is fortunate to have many candidates who are well-qualified. ... Last May?three months before Gov. Perry announced his candidacy?I contributed to Gov. Romney's campaign and committed to supporting him. Both candidates have impressive records of creating jobs and controlling spending in their home states. My support of Gov. Romney does not lessen my regard for Gov. Perry."

Analysis: Will mild winter mean summertime blues for retailers?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - With the meteoric jump in shares of Apple Inc and turmoil in the bank sector garnering the spotlight in recent months, one group managed to fly under the radar despite strong gains - retailers.

Since hitting a 13-month low in early October and flirting with bear market territory, the S&P 500 <.spx> has risen 17.2 percent. During the same time frame the S&P retail index <.rlx> has climbed 22.6 percent.

The gains were supported by a confluence of events: improvement in the domestic economy, a mild U.S. winter and a form of economic Darwinism that left stronger retailers intact after the recession.

The mild winter may have helped retailers in the first quarter, but may work against them in the second quarter, if consumers who spent more than they anticipated are forced to pull back.

Sales at U.S. retailers barely grew in April, indicating consumer spending may be losing steam. Home Depot , the world's biggest home improvement chain, for one, said this week that growth slowed in April after the warm winter boosted spending.

"I can't definitively say that I am worried that the weather pulled ahead the spending, but the weather has gotten them up and out shopping, so I don't know if this is going to continue forever," said Kim Forrest, senior equity research analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group in Pittsburgh.

The latest monthly same-store sales results would seem to bear that out, with several large retailers missing expectations for April.

Data for March showed consumer spending rose only 0.1 percent when adjusted for inflation, even though income rose the most in three months, indicating consumers were putting away more of their cash.

"The thing that really jumped out on me on the personal income was the income growth had slowed on a year-over-year basis for four straight months - so I wasn't excited about seeing that," said Scott Armiger, portfolio manager at Christiana Trust in Greenville, Delaware.

The recent strong performance of shares of discount retailers Family Dollar Stores Inc , Dollar General Corp and Dollar Tree Inc , which performed well during the recession when shoppers hunted for bargains, is another sign investors are shifting their portfolios ahead of the slower summer months.

Since March 31, as the S&P 500 has weakened, those discounters have done well. The S&P is down 6.6 percent in that time, but Dollar General shares have risen 0.5 percent, Dollar Tree has climbed 2.8 percent and Family Dollar is up 3.1 percent.

Shares of Wal-Mart Stores Inc , the world's biggest retailer, were up 5 percent on Thursday after it reported strong quarterly results, including a rise in U.S. same-store sales.

The recession also forced retailers to sharpen business practices, with weaker players either falling by the wayside through bankruptcy or being gobbled up through acquisitions, with the bankruptcy of electronics retailer Circuit City perhaps being the most notable.

More recently on the M&A front, Bed Bath & Beyond Inc agreed to acquire smaller competitor Cost Plus Inc .

GAS PRICES FALL

Should the recent economic slowing prove to be more a blip on the radar than the start of a trend, investors may be able to take advantage.

The recent decline in gas prices gives consumers more disposable income, which may help retailers during their leaner sales periods.

"If we get any kind of pop, any kind of economic growth or some help for the consumers - a nice drop in gas prices - they will do very well," said Armiger.

An economic improvement in the back half of the year would also dovetail with the two biggest selling periods for retailers - the back-to-school and Christmas holiday seasons.

"Do I think the consumer is going to roll over and die forever? No," said Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors in New York.
