So we managed to whip up a tidal wave of emotion and opinion when we made the call that the ?outsourcing industry?, in its current state is, quite frankly, a sham. ?When over 30,000 people read something, there?s a reason why? so let?s drill down into what this all means.
Outsourcing has an image problem, not a delivery problem.?The intent of the blog was to deplore the shoddy image of outsourcing in today?s economy and the discuss the lousy job the industry ? as a whole ? has done in defining itself. ?It wasn?t to slam the premise behind outsourcing, or the performance of engagements: the ?industry? produces wads of cash and healthy margins while saving buyers lots and lots of money (our own research emphatically supports this fact).
Buyers and providers are desperate to alter the perception of ?outsourcing?, it?s the?intermediary?businesses profiting from vendor?marketing?dollars which are afraid of change. ?I have never had so many ?Thank God you called it? emails from buyers and providers this week. ?The only people we have upset are some of the events firms and advisors/analysts who take money from service provider marketing people, as this paints their whole modus operandi in a bad light. I even got some hate mail from a couple of entities, whose entire businesses survive on extracting marketing dollars from services providers, because they claim they would lose their identity if we stopped lauding the ?outsourcing? vernacular. ?They are worried that if outsourcing gets submerged into the business ?mainstream?, service providers will park their marketing dollars with entities who are marketing/promoting/analyzing real business services and not only ?outsourcing?. ?While many intermediaries constantly complain that buyers wary of outsourcing are afraid of change, why don?t they practice what they preach and change their own philosophy ? and then their clients will follow?
Buyer networks need to be focused on the business end-game of outsourcing, not the ?act? itself. ??Outsourcing? as we call it today, really is a component of a business function, not the business function itself. It is a means to an end, not the end itself. It?s not dissimilar from the Cloud computing concept, except it?s about externalizing services, not IT infrastructure. Regardless of business function, Cloud has relevance as an enabler to achieve better things ? and it?s the same for ?outsourcing?. I would prefer to see us creating broader communities around business objectives and have process-externalization and expertise augmentation as a key part of each discussion. For example, you can?t go to a conference focused on creating better global finance operations, without discussing shared services and offshoring / BPO. However, the core focus of that network is about achieving more productive, relevant and global finance, where senior people can have rational and objective-led discussions on global operating models that can take better advantage of global talent and technology.
?Outsourcing? common interests should be segmented into two ?industries?: 1) Labor Arbitrage and 2) Business Services:
1) The Labor Arbitrage Industry. Let?s face some home-truths here ? ?much of ?outsourcing? as it exists today really is labor arbitrage for most of the lower value work in IT, F&A, Procurement, CRM etc. The common thread among buyers is more how to manage LABOR ARBRITRAGE effectively, than anything else. So why doesn?t that industry simply call itself the ?labor arbitrage industry? and focus itself on how to improve processes once part (or all) of them have been moved offshore ? essentially, ?we?ve done our lift and shift, now let?s see how we can make it better, as opposed to running the same cr*p for less?. For some buyers today, all they really care about (sadly) is labor?arbitrage?and making a few adjustments here and there to make the experience more bearable for themselves. ?Hence, if achieving little more than operational efficiency and low-cost delivery is all they care really about, then let?s have them?flourish?in their very own industry focused on this very?practice. ?A spade is a spade, so let?s stop bullsh*tting around the bush here.
2) The Business Services Industry.?Conversely, when we get into the new generation of expertise augmentation engagements, the focus is on a broader range of processes where ? in many cases ? labor arbitrage isn?t really possible. For example, with pharmacovigilance, the chances are that ?buyers? need added help with compliance and quality measures that they simply do not have, and there really aren?t any staff that can be laid off to offset the cost of the incremental services. Moreover, with even more commonly-used horizontal processes such as procurement and HR, most ?buyers? don?t have excess fat to burn ? they have?already?trimmed their inhouse teams to the bone (i.e. many firms have one HR rep to as many as 200 staff). They need new services and help, not a replacement of inhouse labor. So? for those of us who care about achieving new value and new productivity and feel we have a pretty strong handle on labor arbitrage these days, let?s focus on Business Services and the process acumen, domain expertise, technology and global delivery required to make this all happen.
The key is to bring the global services discussion to the real business table, and not create some oddball assortment of offshoring experts who are alienating themselves by creating their own little siloed network.The more the ?outsourcing? industry (as we have been calling it) remains in its silo, the harder it?s ever going to be to have the global business model discussion with the real business function leaders. ?We have to move the needle on this issue, or we?re going to become part of a dying breed. However, we need to start setting the new agenda on how business function leaders approach expertise augmentation. They?re the people we have to be talking to. Join us in our cause!
Too many people scan headlines and don?t absorb the real facts ? you know who you are. ?Yes, we sensationalized the headline to get the eyeballs this critical issue warrants. ?However, if you actually read the bloody piece, you?d realize we were not debating the pros and cons of outsourcing itself, we were highlighting what the industry needs to do to become more relevant to the real business decision makers (i.e. less wedding-dress and more marriage).

There and then, you'll be treated to a night of great food, great company and great food writing, all to benefit Slow Food Seacoast.
It's $60 and you'll get food created by Street Food 360 chefs, all based on recipes from the five authors who will be reading, as well as coffee and dessert at the end (dessert from Beach Pea Baking and Byrne and Carlson). There will be plenty of oysters, too (from J.P.'s Shellfish and Island Creek Oysters). Nice.
After some noshing and imbibing from the cash bar, complete with special cocktail, the five authors will read from their work and after, we can all hang out for dessert and more imbibing. I can walk home, which is great. You can order the books through RiverRun Bookstore and have the authors sign them when you're at the event.

He's the author of "Serve Yourself: Nightly Adventures in Cooking for One," from Ten Speed Press, and the coauthor of "The Fearless Chef" with Boston chef Andy Husbands. Of all the different areas in communications to discuss in this column, I believe to be of value, I will start where everyone prepping should start:??? a plan.
After many years of working in emergency services, I have learned you need to plan for events ahead of time.You can?t, of course,? plan for every event but you really need to plan for events of high risk.
First,? look at your communication needs and identify what you are trying to accomplish.? If you are not part of a local group and don?t have family or friends close by, then your communication needs are going to be more modest than others.
Step 1:? At the very basic level, you will need an AM/FM radio with shortwave capability with a backup power source.? Your backup power may be as simple as an extra set of batteries or as complex as a solar panel setup.? With this simple set up you will be able to receive alerts from official sources about the current status of the event and, with the addition of the shortwave, you can also listen to news from around the world.
If you have a need to communicate directly with a group, family, or friends during an event, you will need more equipment and knowledge.? There are many things to consider at this next level such as distance you will need to communicate, terrain, obstructions, and antenna choices.? Each of these will drive your choices of equipment to purchase.
Step 2:? If you are just going to communicate in your neighborhood, then probably FRS (Family Radio Services) radios would be fine.? Anything greater than a mile,? and you will need to step up to a radio with more power and better antennas.
Step 3:? The next level would be about two to five miles which a good five watt Walkie Talkie may do the job.? Just remember other factors such as the terrain, buildings, battery power of the radio, and your location play an important part as to how well you are able to communicate.
Step 4:? Another option is to get a license and use GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) which would enable you to even install your own repeater to further extend your communications.
Step 5:? A popular option, and what I depend on also, is Amateur Radio.? This greatly enhances your options and capabilities.? Of course with amateur radio you will have to study and take a test.
You have to realize with each step up to another level will come increased cost and commitment but also increased capabilities.? In future columns, I plan on covering these options individually to assist you in making informed choices on your radio communication needs.? The article "Point-of-care genetic testing for personalisation of antiplatelet treatment (RAPID GENE): a prospective, randomised, proof-of-concept trial," reports on the use of a simple cheek swab test, the Spartan RX CYP2C19, performed by nurses at the patient's bedside. This revolutionary technology allows doctors to rapidly identify patients with a genetic variant known as CYP2C19*2. Cardiac stent patients with this variant are at risk of reacting poorly to standard anti-platelet therapy with Plavix? (clopidogrel).
The study demonstrated that tailored drug treatment therapy made possible by the genetic testing successfully protected all of the patients with the at-risk genetic variant from subsequent adverse events, while 30 per cent of patients treated with standard therapy did not receive adequate protection.
"For the first time in medicine, nurses were able to perform DNA testing at the patient's bedside. This is a significant step towards the vision of personalized medicine," said Dr. Derek So, Interventional Cardiologist at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI), and principal investigator of the RAPID GENE study.
Study Details
The RAPID GENE study enrolled 200 patients who were being treated with cardiac stenting for an acute coronary syndrome or stable angina. Patients were randomized to a treatment strategy of rapid point-of-care genotyping and Effient? (prasugrel) for CYP2C19*2 carriers, or to standard therapy with Plavix? (clopidogrel). The Spartan RX CYP2C19 bedside DNA test was performed by nurses who received a 30-minute training session, but had no prior laboratory training. The test had a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 99.4% compared with DNA sequencing. For CYP2C19*2 carriers, treatment with prasugrel completely eliminated High on-treatment Platelet Reactivity (HPR). HPR is a marker for patients at risk of complications after stenting. In contrast, 30.4% of carriers receiving clopidogrel had HPR at 1 week.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Concluding three days of fervent, public disagreement, a Supreme Court seemingly split over ideology will now wrestle in private about whether to strike down key parts or even all of President Barack Obama's historic health care law. The justices' decision, due this June, will affect the way virtually every American receives and pays for care.
The court wrapped up public arguments Wednesday on the overhaul, which is designed to extend health insurance to most of the 50 million Americans now without it. The first and biggest issue the justices must decide is whether the centerpiece of the law, the requirement that nearly all Americans carry insurance or pay a penalty, is constitutional.
Wednesday's argument time was unusual in that it assumed a negative answer to that central question. What should happen to other provisions, the justices and lawyers debated, if the court strikes down the requirement? If the justices are following their normal practice, they had not even met to take a preliminary vote in the case before all argument concluded.
Questions at the court this week days showed a strong ideological division between the liberal justices who seem inclined to uphold the law in its entirety and the conservative justices whose skepticism about Congress' power to force people to buy insurance suggests deep trouble for the insurance requirement, and possibly the entire law.
The divide on the court reflects a similar split in public opinion about the law, which Congress approved two years ago when Democrats controlled both houses. The justices' decision is sure to become a significant part of this year's presidential and congressional election campaigns, in which Republicans have relentlessly attacked the law.
Both liberal and conservative justices appeared on Wednesday to accept the administration's argument that at least two important insurance changes are so closely tied to the must-have-coverage requirement that they could not survive without it: provisions requiring insurers to cover people regardless of their existing medical problems and limiting how much those companies can charge in premiums based on a person's age or health.
Less clear was whether the court would conclude the entire law, with its hundreds of unrelated provisions, would have to be cast aside.
The justices also spent part of the day considering a challenge by 26 states to the expansion of the federal-state Medicaid program for low-income Americans ? an important feature which alone was expected to extend coverage to 15 million people and which no lower court has rejected.

Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. took a few seconds at the end of the Medicaid argument to make a final plea for the court to uphold the entire law, which he said would "secure the blessings of liberty" for millions of Americans by providing them with affordable health care.
Verrilli told the court that Congress had made a policy decision to fight the high cost of medical care through the new law. "I would urge the court to respect that judgment," he said.
Paul Clement, the lawyer for the states challenging the law, retorted that it would be a strange definition of liberty to make people who may not want it buy health care insurance. And he called Congress' threat to cut all Medicaid funding from states that refuse to expand the program "a direct threat to our federalism."
Not since 2000, when the court resolved the Bush v. Gore dispute over Florida election returns that sealed George W. Bush's election as president has a Supreme Court case drawn so much attention.
In their questions Wednesday, liberal justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer took issue with Clement, who was asking that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act be tossed out in its entirety.
"What's wrong with leaving this in the hands of those who should be fixing this?" asked Sotomayor, referring to Congress.
Chief Justice John Roberts also spoke about parts of the law that "have nothing to do with any of the things we are" talking about.
For example, Ginsburg observed that the act deals with issues such as black lung disease.
"Why make Congress redo those?" she asked. "There are many things" that have "nothing to do with affordable health care."
But Clement said the court would be leaving "a hollow shell" if it decided to excise the several key provisions. "The rest of the law cannot stand," he contended.
Roberts and Justice Anthony Kennedy also asked hard questions of Deputy Solicitor General Edwin Kneedler that indicated they are at least considering Clement's arguments. Kneedler said that the only other provisions the court should kill in the event the mandate is stricken are the two that bar refusing coverage to sick people and limiting the charges to old or sick people.
Justice Antonin Scalia suggested many members of Congress might not have voted for the bill without the central provisions, and he said the court should not go through each and every page to sort out what stays and what goes.
"What happened to the Eighth Amendment?" Scalia asked, referring to the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment. "You really expect us to go through 2,700 pages?"
In the afternoon arguments, the liberal justices made clear they would vote to uphold the Medicaid expansion, for which the federal government would pay almost all the costs.
Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, Ginsburg and Breyer voiced strong disagreement with the states' contention that the expansion of the joint state-federal program would be unconstitutionally coercive.
"Why is a big gift from the federal government a matter of coercion?" Kagan asked.
Even Roberts joined his liberal colleagues in questioning Clement about the states' argument that that the expansion comes with too many strings.
"Well, why isn't that a consequence of how willing they have been since the New Deal to take the federal government's money? And it seems to me that they have compromised their status as independent sovereigns because they are so dependent on what the federal government has done, they should not be surprised that the federal government having attached the ? they tied the strings, they shouldn't be surprised if the federal government isn't going to start pulling them," Roberts said.
A colorful assembly of demonstrators sounded off pro and con outside the marble court building all three days, though Wednesday's crowd was the smallest.
Supporters of the law held a morning news conference to stress the importance of Medicaid. And, marching on the sidewalk outside the court, they repeated chants they had used the previous two days, including "Ho, ho, hey, hey, Obamacare is here to stay." Most of their group departed not long after arguments began inside.
Opponents of the law, including Susan Clark of Santa Monica, Calif., also stood outside the court. Clark, who was wearing a three-cornered colonial-style hat, carried a sign that read "Obamacare a disaster in every way!"
"Freedom, yes. Obamacare, no," other opponents chanted.

As the manager of recruitment, I strive to find recent graduates or employees at other companies who are especially talented that would make good additions to our company. As a result, I travel to college campuses and job fairs looking for ideal candidates. When not traveling, I help oversee the interview process for prospective employees as well as training procedures.
On a scale of one to ten I would rate my job satisfaction as an eight or nine. I love traveling regularly and I love meeting new people. I am always excited by the talented young people I encounter on our recruitment trips. I am also given wide reign over how I want to run this division and handle recruitment. Autonomy and freedom are incredibly important to me, so being given the responsibility of running my own department is incredibly important to me.
Whenever I encounter some particularly inspiring students or potential employees it is especially rewarding. A lot of people are fulfilling their dreams by getting a job with our company and it is simply amazing to be a part of that. Needless to say, there is very little I would change about my job.
I originally got into this line of work out of college. I started off as a human resources analyst: I essentially tracked data like turnover rate, starting salaries, and other statistics that are important for maintaining top talent when competing against other companies. After working in that role for many years, my name came up for promotion when our company needed a new manager. I was fortunate enough to land the job!
Everyday is fairly satisfying for me. I am either meeting, interviewing, or assessing new candidates for the company. As previously mentioned, this is an inspiring process. I get to meet people at the peak of potential about to embark on exciting careers. It is great to work with them on a daily basis. I am also immensely proud of all the hard work my team does in setting up job fairs or researching colleges to visit. They do a lot of the legwork involved in setting these events up and I appreciate this immensely.
My job is rarely stressful these days, thankfully. Human resources is a good field for low-stress work, I have noticed. Many of my colleagues in other departments fight against deadlines and other short-term issues; meanwhile, human resources officers tend to focus primarily on longer term goals, like finding new talent that will eventually be needed. This allows us to carefully plan out new strategies without being rushed.
In fact, this is one of my favorite parts of the job. The only time there is remotely any stress is when a department suddenly needs critical people and we are tasked with filling these spots as quickly as possible. This is rare, however, as either people can temporarily fill jobs or can take on new responsibilities for the time being. Even with the stressful patches, I am very happy with the balance I have achieved with my personal life and my work. I have plenty of time for my family and myself.
Someone with my experience in my position could make between $90,000 and $100,000 depending on company size and other factors. I am very pleased with my salary and the lifestyle I live from it. I enjoy the work and make good money doing it, so I cannot complain. In addition, I travel frequently for work and am also entitled to five weeks of paid vacation along with other benefits. Needless to say, I am very pleased with this; it makes any temporary stress well worth it.
To get hired in this field you should focus on a major in business, human resources, or communications. I majored in business and then earned my MBA after a few years of working. This combination set me up for the management position I currently am in. In addition to college, you need strong written and verbal communication skills. You also need to enjoy and understand people. Being social and being able to read people is invaluable in a position that requires you to make value judgments on people you have just met.
In five years I hope to be either in the same position or promoted up to chief human resources officer, which is the next level. Either way, I plan on staying in human resources for the entirety of my career.
