Investing In Gold On The Market | Gold Trading

Gold investing, believe it or not, is still considered a standard for monetary exchange in many countries to this day. Gold is probably one of the most liquid investments and is traded in the stock market" 24 hours a day everywhere in the world. In other words, this means that you can buy and sell gold in just about every country. There are different formats you can choose from gold investing, such as gold bars or coins, gold accounts, gold mining shares, gold stock, gold futures, and gold certificates.

Gold investing, as compared to other market sectors, can be quite complex and intimidating for investors who have not yet researched it in depth. Gold investing stands out as a diversifier and with your stocks, bonds and cash, gold can help offset variations in the market. There are a lot of financial consultants that recommend having at least 5% of gold in their stock portfolio. Some gold investors believe that a reasonable distribution of gold in a moderate, diversified portfolio is 5% to 15% during a bull market in gold and is 1 to 3% during a bear market in gold. This allocation will provide stable insurance for your stock portfolio, portfolio diversification, and excellent long-term return on investment. With gold up in price 23% in 2006, gold investing offsets weakness in other investments.Gold is in a bull market because its core investment fundamentals are so outstanding. The gold price, like every other commodity or stock, is ultimately driven by supply and demand. When gold investing, coins are a popular way to invest as they are easy to buy and sell. Gold bullion coins are priced according to their weight. The most popular bullion gold coins are the South African Krugerrand, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, the American Gold Eagle and American Gold Buffalo.

Traditionally, gold investing has provided the best protection against financial disaster and turmoil. In circumstances such as currency deflation or high inflation, gold investing offers you both safety and security. The extent of the upside potential for gold is a function of the amount of paper assets that would be sold off and converted to gold, in the event of a financial catastrophe. If you have only paper in your stock portfolio, know that gold tends to move in the opposite direction of paper investments when stock trading.

Gold investing in gold mining shares is when you invest in the mining companies searching for the gold and not in the gold directly. The appreciation potential of a gold share is depending upon the future price of gold. When gold investing, it is important to note that many mining firms sell their future production years in advance. This means that with gold mutual fund investing your risk is more varied. Some funds offer a broad mix of international mining stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How to be up-to-date with gold&silver markets?
I am currently investing in Silver and Gold markets but I don't know good source of information that can affect my investments and I live in sub-continent so sometimes markets close earlier and sometimes these are holidays because I don't know about western holidays/cultural events when markets are closed. So please tell me what is the best source of information and specifically what things going to affect silver and gold. Furthermore, how to know about holidays in international markets special events regarding this..

    Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
I rely on the Kitco website as the best source for relatively unbiased information. Watch out, there are many marketeers in gold and silver which will send you almost daily a newsletter. But more often than not those articles are not based on facts, but rather hype that precious metals are the only assets that will increase in value, while also predicting the impending collapse of the major paper currencies. Don't buy their hype, or will probably get badly burned by it.

  2. QUESTION:
What is the best way to invest in gold without buying buying gold coins.?
Also now that gold is so high what is the best way to invest in gold thru the stock market.

  3. QUESTION:
What are the advantages and disadvantages to investing in gold?
Is it safe to invest in Gold in today's stock market? I've never invested before and I'm just curious about Gold, it seems safe but I'd like to learn more.

    • ANSWER:
It depends how you define "safe"; gold is a "hedge", not an investment, so if history is anything to go by, if you buy an ounce of gold today it will cost about the same as a fine quality Mens' suit. Fifty years from now, your ounce of gold will STILL be worth the amount of money required to buy the same suit.

If you purchased quality common stocks with your thousand dollars instead, some years you'd lose a little, some you'd gain a little or a lot, but over the next fifty years you would AVERAGE a return of between 7% & 12%, so you'd end up with stocks worth somewhere between ,457 and 9,002.

It is doubtful a Mens' suit will cost ,000 a mere 50 years from now, given that they cost about twenty times today what they did in 1950.

"Safe" does not make sense for investments...

  4. QUESTION:
What can the Best Gold Market Broker from California do for me? I'm new to the gold market.?
Provide me background, references, certifications/licenses, and the simplicity of gold market investing. I want to learn a lot before I begin. Web site info would be good if I can learn from it. thanks

    • ANSWER:
Do you want to invest in gold?? If so, the easiest way to do that is simply buy the gold etf, ticker GLD. You don't need an expensive broker to do that, just an online tradign account.

If you're looking to learn all about the fundamentals of gold and the rest of the stock market, here are a few of my favorite sites:

  5. QUESTION:
Is there a internet site for investing that trades 24 hrs daily?
Trying to trade in the gold market, but have not been able to find a site that trades all hours other markets are open.

    • ANSWER:
check out this site. it will lead you to a leading legitimate forex site that allows trading in gold, silver, oil as well as exotic currencies where applicable. the symbol for gold is XAU, silver is XAG and oil is also OIL. traders can perform day-trading in gold which means deals are usually completed before the close of trading that day but it is not necessary to complete the deal within a day. the deal can be extended for two or three days, depending on how the trader decides to make the deal. once a day-trading deal is opened, it can only close in one of three ways: the trader ends the deal, the deal reaches its stop/loss limit and the date decided for ending is reached
until one of these three things happens, the deal continues. when your day-trading gold deal is open, it is renewed automatically every night at 22:00 GMT. get more information from the site below. all the best.

New treatment for stroke set to increase chances of recovery

May 29, 2013 ? University of Leicester researchers have contributed to a landmark study which has revealed a new way to treat strokes caused by bleeding inside the brain.

The study found that intensive blood pressure lowering in patients with intracerebral haemorrhage, the most serious type of stroke, reduced the risk of major disability and improved chances of recovery by as much as 20 per cent.

The study, which involved more than 2800 patients from 140 hospitals around the world, was announced today at the European Stroke Conference in London, and published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Professor Thompson Robinson, Deputy Head of the University of Leicester's Department of Cardiovascular Sciences, was the UK co-ordinator for the study and co-authored the paper.

The study was led by the George Institute for Global Health, in Sydney, Australia.

Professor Thompson Robinson said: "Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the UK and the most common adult cause of neurological disability. Approximately 1 million people are living with the consequences of stroke in the United Kingdom, a third with life-changing severe disability. Every year an estimated 152,000 people in the UK have a stroke and intracerebral haemorrhage -- spontaneous bleeding within the brain most often due to hypertension -- accounts for at least 10 per cent of all cases.

"Intracerebral haemorrhage kills about half of those affected within one month and leaves most survivors disabled, and to date there is no specific treatment for this type of stroke.

"The results of the study show that intensively reducing high blood pressure within 6 hours of onset of a bleeding-related stroke is safe, and results in a significant shift from being dead and dependent to being alive and independent after stroke. Because it involves treatment with already available blood pressure-lowering treatments, the results should be easy to implement in all hospitals and be of benefit to patients. It is important to reinforce that stroke is a medical emergency, and individuals who suspect that they may have had a stroke should dial 999 and seek urgent medical attention.

"Leicester has a long-standing interest in acute stroke and blood pressure research, and hosts the NIHR Trent Stroke Local Research Network. There are many opportunities for Leicester patients presenting with stroke to participate in research to improve outcomes for future patients with stroke."

Professor Bruce Neal of The George Institute and The University of Sydney said the study challenges previous thought about blood pressure lowering in intracerebral haemorrhage.

He said: "The study findings will mean significant changes to guidelines for stroke management worldwide. They show that early intensive blood pressure lowering, using widely available therapies, can significantly improve the outcome of this illness.

"We hope to see hospital emergency departments around the world implement the new treatment as soon as possible. By lowering blood pressure, we can slow bleeding in the brain, reduce damage and enhance recovery.

"The study findings are tremendously exciting because they provide a safe and efficient treatment to improve the likelihood of a recovery without serious disability -- a major concern for those who have experienced stroke.

"The only treatment option to date has been risky brain surgery, so this research is a very welcome advance."

The study found patients who suffered an acute intracerebral haemorrhage and received the blood pressure lowering treatment were better off from both a physical and psychological perspective.

Photoshop Leaps to the Cloud—Should You Follow?

Whether you want to do portrait touch-ups or reality-bending illustrations, Photoshop is the go-to. And the professional version of the program has become so complex that few people would call themselves experts on all facets of it.

But the software program, now more than two decades old, has just made a huge leap?one that sparked heated responses from customers. Gone are the old cardboard boxes with installation discs. Gone, too, is the need for serial numbers to authenticate electronic downloads. Adobe is moving Photoshop (as well as its entire suite, including Illustrator, InDesign, and Dreamweaver) to a cloud service and charging its users a monthly fee to download and continue using the software.

From Cardboard to Cloud

In early May Adobe Systems announced that customers will have to join an online service called Creative Cloud to access the professional software. The service made its debut last year when the company began luring customers by offering discounts. Now, however, Adobe is using it to phase out the old distribution methods.

For new customers, Photoshop costs $19.99 per month with an annual plan. To gain access to the entire suite of programs, you can upgrade for $49.99 per month. An application manager handles all the software downloads and updates.

There is a catch: Users have to validate memberships periodically (every 30 days for month-to-month subscribers; every 99 days for annual memberships) for security purposes and product updates. The cross-platform license allows users to download programs on up to two personal computers. The synch function preserves the user's preferences and settings on both machines.

The cloud will provide users with continuous software updates, which is another notable departure. Adobe typically ran on an 18- to 24-month development cycle for releasing big enhancements to the program, leaving users to decide whether to hang on to their older versions or spring for the new one. The continuous changes will allow Adobe to more freely integrate features across its suite of programs.

For now the latest version, Photoshop CS6, can be downloaded under a perpetual software license for $699. While the company plans to continue providing bug fixes and security updates for that version, CS6 won't have the latest improvements of the soon-to-be-released Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud).

New Features

As with previous product releases, there will be a host of improvements for Photoshop CC.

Storage: In addition to a seamless updating process, Creative Cloud members will have storage space where they can back up their files or share work with coworkers on multiple devices and within Adobe's user community at large.

Blurring: A new camera-shake reduction tool cuts down on blurring.

Pixelation: In what Adobe calls intelligent upsampling, users can blow up an image to the size of a billboard without pixelating it.

3D Editing: Previously, users had to upgrade to an additional application in order to perform 3D image editing. Now it will be combined in one program.

Alternative Options

Not surprisingly, many users who were upset with the idea of renting rather than owning their creative software took to Adobe's blog and Facebook page to complain. For those feeling loath to pay for the company's cloud service, there are alternatives.

For users who just need basic photo editing, there's still the consumer version, Photoshop Elements 11, which downloads for a one-time fee of $99.99. To minimize the learning curve, you can switch from "Quick," "Guided," or "Expert" editing modes. Among many clever features in Elements 11 is one that lets you plot your photos on a map based on where they were taken.

There are several free applications. For Mac users, the most basic is Apple's iPhoto that comes installed on new computers and can do the basics. The latest version, iPhoto '11, can create calendars, cards and other print products through Apple's fee-based service. Windows users can download the highly acclaimed Paint.NET. Its advanced features allow users to work in layers and undo edits with a History tool.

There are dozens of free Web-based editors, such as Gimpshop. The downside is that you have to first upload your photos to a third-party site, then download them again if you want edited copies on your hard drive. Otherwise, it's fairly easy to share images via social media.

Adobe's Photoshop Express Editor mimics the common features of its software versions. It also provides a good starting point if you want to get more advanced later on. FotoFlexer is a good alternative as well.

Shares under pressure on Fed stimulus jitters

By Marc Jones

LONDON (Reuters) - World shares were under pressure for a second day on Thursday and the dollar slipped against the yen, as uncertainty over when the U.S. Federal Reserve might slow its stimulus program dominated markets.

Top European stocks <.fteu3> were rangebound after heavy falls on Wednesday, but another 5 percent dive in Japan's Nikkei<.n225> in Asian trading left MSCI's world index <.miwo00000pus> at a three-week low.

"The market is being dominated by expectations of Fed tightening," said Daiwa securities economist Tobias Blattner. "German government bond... yields have gone up quite significantly and after this massive rally equities are correcting to a certain extent."

The U.S. job market and the economy as a whole may be strong enough in a few months to allow the Fed to pare its bond buying by a small amount, dovish Fed policymaker Eric Rosengren said on Wednesday.

The uncertainty left the dollar broadly weaker and hovering near a session low of 100.555 against the yen. The euro drifted up to $1.2964 and towards a two-week high.

European Commission sentiment data is due at 0900 GMT, with investors looking for signs of a pickup following recent patchy surveys. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande also meet ahead of a June EU summit.

In the debt market, German Bund futures recovered some ground after a recent sell-off as stock market jitters bolstered demand for less risky assets. Investors were also reluctant to place big bets before a sale of 5- and 10- year bonds later in the day.

(AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is preparing to nominate former Bush administration official James Comey to head the FBI, people familiar with the decision said Wednesday.

Three people with knowledge of the selection said Obama planned to nominate Comey, who was the No. 2 in President George W. Bush's Justice Department. The three people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the selection ahead of Obama's announcement, which was not expected immediately.

Comey became a hero to Democratic opponents of Bush's warrantless wiretapping program when Comey refused for a time to reauthorize it. Bush revised the surveillance program when confronted with the threat of resignation by Comey and current FBI Director Robert Mueller, who is stepping down in September.

Comey's selection was first reported by NPR and was not expected to be announced for several days at least. Senate confirmation will be needed.

The change in leadership comes as the FBI and Justice Department are under scrutiny for their handing of several investigations. Obama has ordered a review of FBI investigations into leaks to reporters, including the secret gathering of Associated Press phone records and emails of a Fox News reporter. And there have been questions raised about whether the FBI properly responded to warnings from Russian authorities about a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings. The agency, meanwhile, is conducting a highly-anticipated investigation into the Internal Revenue Service over its handling of conservative groups seeking tax exempt status.

Comey was deputy attorney general in 2005 when he unsuccessfully tried to limit tough interrogation tactics against suspected terrorists. He told then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales that some of the practices were wrong and would damage the department's reputation.

Some Democrats denounced those methods as torture, particularly the use of waterboarding, which produces the same sensation as drowning.

Earlier in his career, Comey served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, one of the nation's most prominent prosecutorial offices and one at the front lines of terrorism, corporate malfeasance, organized crime and the war on drugs.

As an assistant U.S. attorney in Virginia, Comey handled the investigation of the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers housing complex near Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, that killed 19 U.S. military personnel.

Comey led the Justice Department's corporate fraud task force and spurred the creation of violent crime impact teams in 20 cities, focusing on crimes committed with guns.

Comey was at the center of one of the Bush administration's great controversies ? an episode that focused attention on the administration's controversial tactics in the war on terror.

In stunning testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2007, Comey said he thought Bush's no-warrant wiretapping program was so questionable that Comey refused for a time to reauthorize it, leading to a standoff with White House officials at the bedside of ailing Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Comey said he refused to recertify the program because Ashcroft had reservations about its legality.

Senior government officials had expressed concerns about whether the National Security Agency, which administered the warrantless eavesdropping program, had the proper oversight in place. Other concerns included whether any president possessed the legal and constitutional authority to authorize the program as it was carried out at the time.

The White House, Comey said, recertified the program without the Justice Department's signoff, allowing it to operate for about three weeks without concurrence on whether it was legal. Comey, Ashcroft, Mueller and other Justice Department officials at one point considered resigning, Comey said.

"I couldn't stay if the administration was going to engage in conduct that the Department of Justice had said had no legal basis," Comey told the Senate panel.

A day after the March 10, 2004, incident at Ashcroft's hospital bedside, Bush ordered changes to the program to accommodate the department's concerns. Ashcroft signed the presidential order to recertify the program about three weeks later.

The dramatic hospital confrontation involved Comey, who was the acting attorney general during Ashcroft's absence, and a White House team that included Bush's then-counsel, Alberto Gonzales, and White House chief of staff Andy Card, Comey said. Gonzales later succeeded Ashcroft as attorney general.

Comey testified that when he refused to certify the program, Gonzales and Card headed to Ashcroft's sick bed in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital.

When Gonzales appealed to Ashcroft, the ailing attorney general lifted his head off the pillow and in straightforward terms described his views of the program, Comey said. Then he pointed out that Comey, not Ashcroft, held the powers of the attorney general at that moment.

Gonzales and Card then left the hospital room, Comey said.

"I was angry," Comey told the panel. "I thought I had just witnessed an effort to take advantage of a very sick man who did not have the powers of the attorney general."

Amazon moving ahead with five original TV series

By Alistair Barr

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc said on Wednesday that it will make five original TV series, having used viewer feedback to pick the shows out of a group of 14 pilots filmed by the world's largest Internet retailer earlier this year.

The chosen pilots are: "Alpha House", a political comedy starring John Goodman; "Betas", a comedy about start-up culture in Silicon Valley; "Annebots", a kids' show about robots; "Creative Galaxy", an animated art adventure series; and "Tumbleaf", another kids' show about a small blue fox named Fig.

These are the first TV series ever made by Amazon and represent a major foray for the company into original programming delivered over the Internet, stepping up competition with Netflix Inc and Hulu.

The new series will be shown exclusively on Amazon's Prime Instant Video service later this year and in early 2014, the company said. Prime Instant Video is free for members of Amazon's Prime service, which offers two-day shipping and other benefits in the United States for $79 a year.

Amazon posted all 14 TV pilots online for anyone to watch in April and encouraged viewers to give feedback. The company analyzed the reviews and other data, such as how long people watched, to try to pick shows that are more likely to do well as full series.

"We're thrilled to have emerged safely from this harrowing exercise in online democracy," said Garry Trudeau, the Pulitzer-Prize winning cartoonist who created and wrote "Alpha House".

Amazon will shoot 12 more episodes of "Alpha House" to complete the first season, which will air starting in November, Trudeau added.

Pilots that were not picked up as full series included "Zombieland", a comedy based on the successful movie of the same name, and "Browsers", a musical comedy starring Bebe Neuwirth.

Rhett Reese, the writer and producer of "Zombieland", blamed viewer feedback for the TV show's demise.

"I'll never understand the vehement hate the pilot received from die-hard "Zombieland" fans. You guys successfully hated it out of existence," he wrote on Twitter.

The other pilots that did not make it were: "Dark Minions", "Onion News Network", "Supanatural", "Those Who Can't", "Positively Ozitively", "Sara Solves It" and "Teeny Tiny Dogs".

Title of new Bridget Jones novel revealed

LONDON (AP) ? Everyone's favorite literary singleton will return in a new novel entitled "Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy."

Publishers disclosed the title of Helen Fielding's forthcoming book on Tuesday.

It continues the comic saga of diary-writing Bridget's romantic and professional adventures.

The character, introduced to readers in two 1990s' novels, now must cope with an age of text messaging and social media.

Fielding said Bridget is older now and her "life has moved on. But, the question is, just how much?"

The previous books, "Bridget Jones's Diary" and "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason," sold 15 million copies between them and were adapted into movies starring Renee Zellweger.

The new book will be published Oct. 10 in Britain by Jonathan Cape, and Oct. 15 in the U.S. by Alfred A. Knopf.

Jennifer Lawrence is flanked by brothers Ben (left) and Blaine.

A man has been arrested for allegedly harassing Jennifer Lawrence's brother in hopes of getting close to the actress.

Canadian Zhao Han Cong, 23, was charged by FBI agents in Louisville, Ky. -- the Oscar winner's hometown -- on Monday with interstate stalking and repeated harassing phone communications after he allegedly contacted Blaine Lawrence more than 200 times last month, the New York Daily News reports.

Cong allegedly asked Blaine to put him in touch with Jennifer so he could "protect" her and suggested that "bad things" would happen to the Lawrence family. Cong apparently also referred to himself as Jennifer's "husband for life."

On April 18, Cong flew to Kentucky and continued to reach out to Blaine, reportedly telling Jennifer's brother: "You got me really upset. When I'm, when I'm upset, let's see what happens, all right?"

Cong was reportedly taken into custody after he stopped at a police station seeking the home address of Jennifer and Blaine's mother. He was involuntarily hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation.

Police then arrested Cong after his release from the hospital.

Court stays out of Planned Parenthood funding case

(AP) ? The Supreme Court will not disturb a lower court ruling that blocks Indiana's effort to strip Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood because the organization performs abortions among its medical services.

The justices did not comment Tuesday in rejecting the state's appeal of a federal appeals court ruling in favor of Planned Parenthood.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the state law targeting Planned Parenthood went too far. Indiana is among more than a dozen states that have enacted or considered laws to cut off taxpayer money to organizations that provide abortion.

The law aimed to deny Planned Parenthood funds from the joint federal-state Medicaid health program for the poor that are used for general health services including cancer screening.

In China, US official promotes military ties

BEIJING (AP) ? U.S. National Security Adviser Tom Donilon is pushing for stronger relations between the U.S. and Chinese militaries ahead of a summit between President Barack Obama and China's Xi Jinping.

Donilon told top Chinese Gen. Fan Changlong on Tuesday that the sides should boost cooperation in nontraditional military activities such as peacekeeping, disaster relief and fighting piracy.

Donilon was meeting with Xi and other Chinese leaders over two days in Beijing to prepare for the June 7-8 summit, the first face-to-face meeting between the leaders since Obama's re-election and Xi's promotion to Communist Party chief last November.

Building trust between their militaries is one of the main challenges the sides face in seeking to stop a drift in relations, under pressure from trade disputes and allegations of Chinese cyberspying.

Iraq officials says separate attacks kill 14

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A string of attacks killed at least 14 people in Iraq on Sunday, officials said, in the latest violence of what has been a particularly bloody month in the country.

Iraq has been hit by a wave of bloodshed that has killed some 300 people in the past two weeks alone, raising tensions between the country's Sunni minority and Shiite-led government. The surge in violence has been reminiscent of the sectarian carnage that pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007.

Sunday's deadliest attack took place in the northern city of Mosul, where a car bomb went off at a house early in the morning while a joint army-police unit was conducting door-to-door searches. The blast killed three policemen and one soldier, a provincial police officer said. Twenty people, including four civilians, were wounded.

Also in Mosul, police said militants gunned down a policeman in his car in the city center. Authorities also found a body floating in the Tigris river, shot at close range with hands bound behind the back. Mosul, some 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad, is a former stronghold of Sunni militants.

In northern Baghdad's Kazimiyah district, militants in a speeding car went on a shooting spree that killed three civilians and wounded another, two police officers said. A policeman was killed in another attack in the northern Waziriya neighborhood when gunmen in two cars fired on his vehicle, wounding a colleague as well.

Also, in the capital's Qahira neighborhood, militants armed with silenced pistols shot and killed a secondary school teacher, two police officers said. The motive behind the killing was not clear.

In Iraq's western province of Anbar, the birthplace of the Sunni insurgency led by al-Qaida in Iraq, three soldiers were killed and five wounded in two separate attacks by roadside bombs on their patrols, police and army officers said.

Two medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to release information.

Insurgent attacks have decreased sharply in Iraq since the height of insurgency, but recent spikes in attacks amid months-old Sunni protests against the Shiite-led government have raised fears that sectarian killings could gain fresh momentum across the country.

Alarmed by a nationwide deterioration in the security situation, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has ordered a reshuffle in senior military ranks.

Owners should attend to ugly online reviews, not melt down | The ...

(AP Photo/Matt York) After a particularly ugly TV experience and negative online reviews, the owners of Amy's Baking Co. in Scottsdale, Ariz., allegedly cursed out critics on their Facebook page.

Social media ? Businesses? calm, focused response to posts key to winning back customers, experts say.

Scottsdale, Ariz. ? It was the customer service disaster heard around the Internet.

An Arizona restaurateur, fed up after years of negative online reviews and an embarrassing appearance on a reality television show, allegedly posted a social media rant laced with salty language and angry, uppercase letters that quickly went viral last week, to the delight of people who love a good Internet meltdown.

?

The art of staying cool

No matter how bad the reviews get, experts say businesses need to be willing to admit mistakes and offer discounts to assuage skeptical customers. Still, they acknowledge, the wave of digital feedback can be especially challenging for small businesses with small staffs.

"I AM NOT STUPID ALL OF YOU ARE," read the posting on the Facebook wall of Amy?s Baking Co. in Scottsdale, Ariz. "YOU JUST DO NOT KNOW GOOD FOOD."

It was, to put it kindly, not a best business practice. Add to that an appearance earlier this month on the Fox reality TV show "Kitchen Nightmares" ? where celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay gave up on trying to reform the restaurant after the owners refused to listen to his advice ? and you have a recipe for disaster.

"That?s probably the worst thing that can happen," said Sujan Patel, founder and CEO of Single Grain, a digital marketing agency in San Francisco.

In the evolving world of online marketing, where the power of word of mouth has been wildly amplified by the whims and first impressions of anonymous reviewers posting on dozens of social media websites, online comments, both good and bad, and the reactions they trigger from managers, can make all the difference between higher revenues and empty storefronts.

Hotels, restaurants and other businesses that depend on good customer service reviews have all grappled in recent years with how to respond to online feedback on sites such as Twitter, TripAdvisor, Foursquare, Yelp, Facebook and Instagram, where comments can often be more vitriol than in-person reviews because of the anonymous shield many social media websites provide.

No matter how ugly the reviews get, businesses need to be willing to acknowledge mistakes and offer discounts to lure unhappy customers back, digital marketing experts said.

"In the past, people just sent bad soup back. Well, now they are getting on social media and telling all their friends and friends of friends how bad the soup was and why they should find other places to get soup in the future, so it takes the customer experience to another level," said Tom Garrity of the Garrity Group, a public relations firm in New Mexico.

"The challenge becomes ? how do you respond when someone doesn?t think your food or product is as great as you think it is?"

story continues below

Fighting back ? In Amy and Samy Bouzaglo?s case, the bad reviews were compounded by their reality TV experience. The couple said during a recent episode of "Kitchen Nightmares" that they needed professional guidance after years of battling terrible online reviews. They opened the pizzeria about six years ago.

"Kitchen Nightmares" follows Ramsay as he helps rebuild struggling restaurants. After one bite, he quickly deemed Amy?s Baking Co. a disaster and chided the Bouzaglos for growing increasingly irate over his constructive feedback. Among his many critiques: The store-bought ravioli smelled "weird," a salmon burger was overcooked and a fig pizza was too sweet and arrived on raw dough.

"You need thick skin in this business," Ramsay said before walking out. It was the first time he wasn?t able to save a business, according to the show.

Amy?s Baking Co. temporarily closed last week after the episode aired. A Bouzaglo spokesman said the couple wasn?t available for an interview. The restaurant?s answering machine was full. Emails and Facebook messages were not returned.

A wall post published last week claimed the restaurant?s Facebook, Yelp and Twitter accounts had been hacked, but hundreds of commenters expressed doubt. Social media sites show someone posting as a member of the Bouzaglo family had been insulting customers over negative reviews since at least 2010.

The story bounced across the Internet, generating thousands of comments on Facebook, Yelp and Twitter, and prompting nearly 36,000 people to sign a petition on Change.org that asks the Department of Labor to look into the Bouzaglo?s practice of pocketing their servers? tips.

Although many corporations hire communications experts to respond to every tweet, Facebook message and online review, the wave of digital feedback can be especially challenging for small businesses with small staffs, digital consultants said.

For one thing, there is so much online content to wade through. Roughly 60 percent of all adults get information about local businesses from search engines and entertainment websites such as Yelp or TripAdvisor, according to a 2011 study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

"Customer service is a spectator sport now," said Jay Baer, president of Convince & Convert, a social media marketing consultancy in Indiana. "It?s not about making that customer happy on Yelp. That?s the big misunderstanding of Yelp. It?s about the hundreds of thousands of people who are looking on to see how you handle it. It?s those ripples that make social media so important."

In their "Kitchen Nightmares" episode, Amy and Samy Bouzaglo are seen yelling and cursing at customers inquiring about undercooked food or long delays. They blame online bullies.

China profit growth quickens, no harbinger of recovery

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's industrial profits growth quickened in April from the previous month, though the government noted that the pickup was due mainly to a low comparative base, indicating that the world's second largest economy still faces slack domestic and external demand.

Chinese firms made profits of 436.7 billion yuan ($71.22 billion) in April, up 9.3 percent from the same month last year, quickening from a year-on-year growth of 5.3 percent in March, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Monday.

The improved gains in April were caused by the low comparison base in the same month a year earlier, Yu Jianxun, an official from the bureau's industrial department, said in a statement accompanying the data.

Profits had fallen 2.2 percent in April last year from 2011, compared with gains of 4.5 percent year-on-year growth in March 2012, said Yu.

In the first four months on 2013, Chinese firms made total profits of 1.61 trillion yuan, up 11.4 percent from the same period a year ago, the NBS said (www.stats.gov.cn).

Among the 41 industries tracked, 30 posted profit growth and eight reported a profit drop in the first four months compared with the year earlier period. Three sectors reported turnarounds in profitability.

Profits for manufacturers of computers, telecommuications equipment and electronics were up 44.8 percent from the same period last year, while those in the electricity and heat production and supply industry leapt 92.6 percent.

The ferrous metal smelting and rolling industry reported a 38.6 percent year-on-year increase in profits during the period, while profits in auto manufacturing rose 12.9 percent.

Petroleum refining, coking and nuclear fuel processing sectors swung into profit from losses in the first four months, while profits in oil and gas exploration dropped 7.9 percent.

The figures come after the HSBC/Markit flash purchasing managers index, the earliest indicator of China's industrial activity, showed a contraction for the first time in seven months in May as new orders fell.

The PMI added to concerns that China's economic recovery has stalled and that a sharper cooldown may be imminent.

Obama says nation must do more for fallen heroes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says the nation must do more than just remember its fallen heroes on Memorial Day.

In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama says the country must care for the loved ones the fallen leave behind. He says the country must also make sure that all veterans receive the care and benefits they have earned.

Obama says that, above all, the armed forces must have the support needed to carry out their missions at home and abroad.

In the Republican address, Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe thanks the nation for its prayers and support following Monday's deadly tornado in his home state. He recalls past natural and man-made disasters in Oklahoma and says that while the state was hard hit, "we're not knocked out."

Infantile myofibromatosis: First drug targets in childhood genetic tumor disorder

May 24, 2013 ? Two mutations central to the development of infantile myofibromatosis (IM) -- a disorder characterized by multiple tumors involving the skin, bone, and soft tissue -- may provide new therapeutic targets, according to researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The findings, published in The American Journal of Human Genetics, may lead to new treatment options for this debilitating disease, for which the only current treatment option is repeated surgical removal of the tumors.

IM is an inheritied disorder that develops in infancy or even in utero and tumors continue to present throughout life. The tumors do not metastasize, but can grow large enough to invade the tissue surrounding them causing physical limitations, disfiguration, bone destruction, intestitinal obstruction, and even death. Currently, the standard of care is to excise the tumors when possible, which can be invasive, painful, and disfiguring, and most patients require multiple surgeries throughout their lives.

Led by John Martignetti, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Genetics and Genomic Sciences, Oncological Sciences, and Pediatrics and other researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Hakon Hakonarson, MD, PhD at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the global research team gathered blood samples from 32 people from nine different families affected by the disease and performed whole-exome sequencing, a type of genomic sequencing where all protein coding regions of the genome, called the exome, are analyzed. They identified mutations in two genes: PDGFRB and NOTCH3.

"We are very excited about the findings of this study, which started 10 years ago with the enrollment of the first family," said Dr. Martignetti. "The newest developments in sequencing technology have led to a new breakthrough in understanding this debilitating disease and we can therefore begin identifying drug-based treatments to save lives for some and avoiding the negative quality of life impact of extensive and repeated surgery in others."

PDGFRB and NOTCH3 are two genes that are targeted by existing drugs, including imatinib (GLEEVEC?) and sunitinib (Sutent?). Next, Dr. Martignetti and his team plans to test whether cells grown in the laboratory from myfibromatosis tumors are susceptible to these drugs. They also hope to learn why mutations in these two genes result in disease. "If we can learn how these mutated genes get hijacked to cause cellular miscommunication, and also test existing and novel therapies to see if they shrink the tumors, we hope to improve the lives of the individuals battling this disease," said Dr. Martignetti.

How To Write High Quality Articles That Attract Attention by John ...

Writing can be a hobby, an interest, or an occupation. Many people are capable of writing quality articles but have no idea where to begin or are not confident with their fluency in the language. That???s what this article is about; how to write high quality articles that attract attention. Do you believe that you can be a quality writer? Do you want to be a quality writer?

If you look at writing in a technical viewpoint, yes, it can be difficult but that is only when it comes to the rules of language and grammar, which you can learn quickly. Many people have stated that they are excellent speakers but that does not necessarily hold true for writing. A person can be good at speaking but not at writing, and vice versa. Everyone is capable of becoming a writer given they are willing to learn the process of writing an article step by step.

Is there a process to writing quality articles? Is there a specific structure? Where do you begin? How do you end? Is there a specific style of writing that is required? Basically, the question is how to write high quality articles that attract attention.

Here are some tips:

1. Audience: Think about the audience that will be reading your article. If you were in their shoes, would you read what you are writing? Keep in mind that you want your audience to read your article all the way through to the end.

2. Brainstorming and Research: Think about the topic you will write and the information you want to put in the article. This will help you create a flow of the article and narrow down the research that you will be doing to gather all the data that will be put into your article.

3. Title: Create a title that is interesting and thought provoking so as to get the attention of the readers. At the same time, the title also has to relay what kind of information the readers will be getting out of the article. As a reader yourself, would you actually read an article whose title is very technical and boring?

4. Introduction: The introduction is there to inform the readers what they will be learning as they read the article. Keep the introduction short but concise and simple enough to understand. There is no need to use complicated words because then you will be narrowing down your audience. The same goes for the rest of the article.

5. Body: This is where you will put all the information that you have gathered in your research. Remember to write it as if you were explaining it in your own words because this makes the article more relatable and easy to understand. The content of your article should also be entertaining and at the same time educational. In the body, there are many ways to write, but if the article is for the internet, you can use bullets or numbering. By doing this, you make the information more concise and easier for the audience to read, and at the same time, giving yourself structure and you will know what will come next, creating a good flow to your writing and to the readers. Also, remember to take a pause in between your paragraphs. When paragraphs are lengthy with little white space, readers tend to lose interest in the article.

6. Conclusion: Recap the information that you have given in the entire article briefly. This is where you explain to the readers the main points of your article and the importance of the information you shared with them. When you end your article, you can also give them a few words or questions to make them think about the article and what they have learned from it and maybe how they can use this information to solve a problem or improve a situation.

7. Proofreading: When you are done writing your article, you will learn, as a writer, that proofreading is essential in the process. You should go back and read the entire article again to ensure that there are no errors with your grammar, punctuation, or sentence construction. If there are areas in your article that you feel don???t make sense or are out of place, then you can edit them or omit them. When going through the proofreading process, you can make sure for yourself that the article that you will be posting is at its best.

As you are learning how to write high quality articles that attract attention, you will also learn that you will not be able to grasp all of it overnight. It will take time and errors along the way before you become an expert at it. The most important thing about writing is that there is always room to improve. As a writer, you will have an audience, and these readers will be able to give you feedback with regards to your writing because as readers, they are now the judges or critics of your work. Their feedback can be very helpful to you as a writer.

You can then take the feedback and use it to improve and create your own unique writing style. It is also good to remember, though, that every reader has their own preferences and writing styles that they particularly like or dislike. If you believe, as the writer, that the particular writing style demanded from you is one that you are not familiar or comfortable with, that is in your discretion as to whether you want to learn it or find a different approach that is more appealing.

These are merely tips to help you learn the basic process of writing a quality article. Using these tips, you will also be able to work faster and have direction throughout the processes of writing quality articles. No matter how advanced the writing style or the article, these fundamental elements of writing will always be there. So, continue exploring the endless possibilities of your writing and remember that practice makes perfect.

(AP) ? They were 12 ordinary citizens who didn't oppose the death penalty. But unlike spectators outside the courthouse who followed the case like a daytime soap opera and jumped to demand Jodi Arias' execution, the jurors faced a decision that was wrenching and real, with implications that could haunt them forever.

In an interview Friday, jury foreman William Zervakos provided a glimpse into the private deliberations, describing four women and eight men who struggled with the question: How heinous of a killing deserves a similar fate?

"The system we think is flawed in that sense because this was not a case of a Jeffrey Dahmer or Charles Manson," Zervakos told The Associated Press.

"It was a brutal no-win situation. ... I think that's kind of unfair," the 69-year-old added. "We're not lawyers. We can't interpret the law. We're mere mortals. And I will tell you I've never felt more mere as a mortal than I felt for the last five months."

Zervakos said the most difficult time of the entire trial was hearing directly from victim Travis Alexander's family as his brother and sister tearfully explained how his killing has shattered their lives.

"There was no sound in that jury room for a long time after that because you hurt so bad for these people," he said. "But that wasn't evidence. That's what made it so hard. ... This wasn't about them. This was a decision whether we're going to tell somebody they were going to be put to death or spend the rest of their life in prison."

Zervakos described a deliberations room full of tears and spinning moral compasses as each juror struggled to come to grips with their own beliefs about what factors ? including Arias' young age at the time of the killing and her lack of criminal history ? should cause them to show mercy and spare her life.

"You've got Travis Alexander's family devastated, that he was killed, that he was brutally killed. You've got Jodi Arias' family sitting in there, both families sitting and seeing these humiliating images and listening to unbelievably lurid private details of their lives, and you've got a woman whose life is over, too," Zervakos said. "I mean, who's winning in this situation? And we were stuck in the middle."

Zervakos declined to discuss his thoughts or those of other jurors on whether Arias should have been sentenced to death or life. But he said he was torn between her two personas: a killer and an average young woman struggling through life.

"You heard (prosecutor Juan) Martinez say she was only 27. ... She's old enough that she should have known better," Zervakos said. "I didn't look at it that way. I'm looking at 27 years of an absolutely normal everyday young woman that was living a life that was perfectly normal. Then something changed the trajectory of her life after meeting Travis Alexander, and it spiraled downhill from there."

The same jury on May 8 convicted Arias of first-degree murder in Alexander's killing, but couldn't reach a decision Thursday after about 13 hours of deliberations on whether she should live or die.

Judge Sherry Stephens was forced to declare a mistrial of the penalty phase and dismissed the panel.

A conference with the judge and attorneys is set for June 20 to determine how both sides want to proceed. In the interim, Stephens set a July 18 retrial date.

The mistrial set the stage for a whole new proceeding to determine whether the 32-year-old former waitress should get a life sentence or the death penalty for murdering Alexander five years ago.

Arias stabbed and slashed him nearly 30 times, slit his throat slit and shot him in the forehead. Prosecutors said she attacked Alexander in a jealous rage after he wanted to end their relationship and planned a trip to Mexico with another woman. Arias contends it was self-defense.

Prosecutors now have the option to take the death penalty off the table and avoid a new penalty phase. The judge would then determine whether to sentence Arias to spend her entire life behind bars, or give her life with the possibility of release after 25 years. Given Arias could not afford her own defense, taxpayers footed the bill for court-appointed attorneys at a cost so far of nearly $1.7 million, a price tag that will only balloon if the case moves forward.

Should the state decide to seek death again, jury selection alone could take months, given the difficulty of seating an impartial panel in a case that has attracted global attention and become daily cable TV and tabloid fodder with tales of sex, lies and violence, said jury consultant Jo-Ellan Dimitrius.

"Will it be impossible? No. Will it be tough? Absolutely," she said.

Dimitrius noted that jury selection in the widely publicized trial of infamous serial killer Richard Ramirez, known as the "Night Stalker," who is on death row in California, took six months as attorneys weeded through more than 2,000 prospective jurors.
